How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6006364 / WP22003441 Washer Drum Bearing

Went on You tube and typed in Maytag Neptune model # and typed in how to replace bearings. So I watched the video to understand how to tackle this project, and if I could do it. Appliance pro video was very helpful and so I ordered the parts. Note that Maytag is owned by Whirlpool after a Chat on line with appliance pro - JOY, REP! THANK YOU. I ordered the parts $101.00 with S/H and went to work on it. The outcome was great! It took me all day,but I prevailed and did not give up.GIVE IT TRY! A new washer cost $800.00 +/-.I'm keeping my fingers crossed.done 3 loads so far :)- :)-.Thumbs up. 

First I replaced the two belts because they were very worn. This did not fix the issue. Next I proceeded with removing the belts, pulley system and ultimately the brake assembly and bearing. I ordered a brake removal tool (P/N: 038315) separately for removing the brake assembly. I used some rust penetrating oil on the brake assembly threads and let it sit for a while. Use of the tool and removing the brake was the most labor intensive part. Some outward pressure needed to be placed on the assembly and threads while holding the transmission. This would have saved 10 minutes of spinning without unthreading. The old bearing was rusted to the brake assembly and I couldn't remove it. I cleaned and wirebrushed the area where the bearing goes and applied grease to the bearing. I also cleaned the pulley bearing. I reattached all parts and tested it on spin cycle. Success! The washer will hopefully last another 20 years! If not, I know where to come for my parts. 

Changed front & rear bearings and seal. Used u-tube for step by step directions. Success home repair ?? 

I had attempted to initially repair without using brake tool, but brake wouldn't budge. For those not needing to replace the bearings, an instruction sheet was listed on www.ServiceMatters.com on how to replace the damper pads without using the special brake tool. Since my bearings were also bad, I ended up buying the brake tool elsewhere and used it to disassemble the washer. I used brushed on contact adhesive to install the pads. Others have stated that the tub assembly is 'somewhat' heavy. FYI: unless you are built like a farmboy, I would suggest at least two people when removing/re-installing the tub assembly. I simply cannot believe how much better & quieter the machine operates. Best of all, it beats spending $300+ on a new washer ! 

Replaced Tub bearing and stem and, replaced damper pad and bearing. I Watched online video. It's a job when you open old washer. It is always good idea to inspect and order minor parts e.g. screws and washer. It went good, I had to re-thread breaking assembly and I did it with sharp metal blade. 

Replaced bearings and seal. I used a socket warped with electrical tape and an extension to aline the bearing spacer and bearing during installation of inside bearing. It helps to have someone behind the washer to hold the socket inplace while installing the inside bearing. 

You guys are great I recommend your site to everyone. My parents Maytag Neptune washer sounded like a jet engine. You had the updated lip seal kit and bearings. The video link you had was perfect. Other than smacking my finger with a hammer everything went to plan. 

Replaced the bearings 

After watching the video I disassembled the tub. The disassemble went well but installing the inside bearing was quite the bear. Took about 4 hours start to finish.
