How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6023677 / WPW10662129 Run Capacitor

After an appliance "repairman" pronounced the refrigerator dead and that parts were not available, I checked the model number at AppliancePartsPros.com and read the trouble shooting section and the reviews. The site described the problem and the parts needed for the repair. After installing the two parts the refrigerator was FIXED! One note: If you have an older unit with a control panel it may take it a few hours to come back to life. So be patient.P 

Unplugged refrig., removed compressor relay / capacitor asy. Shook it. Noticed rattling sound which indicates that contacts internally fell apart. The relay smelled burnt. Replaced the relay and capacitor. (they go hand in hand), Pugged in the refrig. power cord and checked for cooling. Good to go. 

Changed the start relay and run capacetor. 

Purchased and replaced the compressor starter and run capacitor. Compressor operating without issue and frig and freezer cooler.

After doing some research on my model refrigerator, quickly found that the most likely culprit of this issue is usually the start device and/or run capacitor. Ordered to replace them and got the parts very fast. And it is great that AppliancePartsPros.com has a youtube channel that shows and explains the necessary steps. After replacing the parts, the compressor immediately came back on and everything was back to working order. 

My husband installed the new capacitor. the freezer then worked normal. the fridge still not working so I ordered a new fan motor. I do not know how the repair was done, as my husband did it. we were very happy with the ease of ordering the parts and the speed with which we received them. the person on the phone was very knowledgeable and knew what we needed. 

Wiggled the thermostat knob and the compressor came back on. Lead me to believe the Cold Control unit was faulty. Chose to replace both ends: New Thermostat, Run Capacitor, and Compressor start kit. Worked well except some of the part numbers need to be cross-referenced online as some get upgraded with a new part number. The instructions/labels don't reflect the new part numbers. Eventually, everything worked out fine! 

Installed the new capacitor and starter. Solved the problem instantly. Refrigerator and freezer cooled down to set levels. The only (minor) complication was that the wire connector was not 100% compatible with the new part. It had to be rotated 180 degrees (the L & N terminals were reversed) and sort of force fitted into the slot. An OK temporary solution but longer term I think I will need to get a new connector and attach it to the wires. Also, the new parts are shorter than the old ones so, as others have already pointed out, the retaining clip is loose and will have to be modified in some way. 

I replaced the compressor Start Device and Run Capacitor at the same time.
