How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3094183 / 279570 Dryer Door Latch Kit

Ordered new door latch kit and replaced the striker and the catch 

Replaced latches 

Removed broken male & female latches and replaced with the new latches. Keep in mind this package contains more than one part so best to watch the how-to video to see what's in the package before ordering. 

Bought replacement parts and installed them. Approx. 30 minutes. 

The kit had more parts then needed, but instructions clearly show you which ones are (and are NOT) needed. This problem has existed since day ONE, and it is clearly a manufacturing error because in this kit, it tells you to use different tension latches then what are originally installed ... and the fit is much tighter now then when it was new. The kit provides NO instructions so you have to figure it out. Because the latches that mount in the door are held by clips on all 4 sides (2 are metal - top and bottom - and 2 are plastic - right and left sides), the only way to get the old ones out is to take the 'inner' door OFF, and clip off the metal portions of the latch using diagonal cutters. Then you can use a flat blade screw driver to push in on the plastic latches. The portion of the latch kit that installs into the actual dryer was not used ... mainly because I could not figure out how to get to them ... and secondly because the door is plenty tight now. 

I fortunately had the model number, searched for the part, watched the repair video. It seemed easy enough, so I ordered the latch kit. It arrived in a couple of days. I removed the door, popped in the female part of the latch, reattached the door, and we were back in business. 

Ordered parts from appliance parts 

The part received was the exact replacement for my Maytag Epic Z dryer. I removed the dryer door using the instructions for changing the opening left or right. Then removed several philips head screws (not the torque head ones) to open the inside of the door. Carefully worked the old latch out with some pliers and a screwdriver. Inserted the new latch, replaced the screws and mounted the door. Works great now!
