Anne, based on the information provided, the door switch WP3406107 has certainly failed. If the door is opening on its own, the latch kit 279570 is likely failing as well.

Hello BR, on the metal plate of the original catch, there should be a number stamped on it. If it is stamped with an 18, the yellow catch with the stamp 20 would be used. If there is not a stamp on the original, it would be likely that the yellow catch would be used.

I need to replace the hinges #WP238460 but I need to know how to get the hinges off. I removed the 4 screws on the door thinking I could just remove the door but the door will not come off the hinges. I did NOT remove the screws from the frame of the dryer as I am not sure if they are metal screws such as on the door or have nuts behind them. I assume if I can get the door off the hinges I could loosen the frame screws and slide the hinges out for replacement. Also I cannot get the door apart as there are screws all around including the bottom which makes those 2 screws inaccessible.

Tim, You will want to lift the top of the dryer and remove the front panel to get access for the hinges.

Alva M, Based on the model number listed the door switch would be part# WP3406107 and you should read continuity from the common wire to one of the other two wire with the door closed and from common to the other wire when the door is open.

I ordered a door latch kit for a Kenmore Dryer. I watched the video. It said that instructions will come with the part and tell me which color of three will replace the color that I have inside the door. I am not going to take apart the door unless I have what color replaces whatever color I have in the door. Can you tell me for example: black uses the blue replacement. and all the possibilities of the different colors I could have or what to expect?

1 Answer

Robert, the latch inside of the door should have a number stamp or a color that would be matched up to one of the new ones. If your current catch does not have a matching number stamp or color, the best way to identify would be using the yellow if it has one catch and is not a 27" wide laundry center or commercial stacked pair. If it is a 27" laundry center or commercial stacked pair, then the green would be used. Based on the model number provided, the yellow catch would be used.

Frank, there is a repair video for the door latch kit 279570 available just under the item image. However, during this failure, the unit can be unplugged, the top panel removed, and the door switch tested at the main control from the wire at connection P8 pin 4 to the wire at connection P8 pin 3 for continuity (door has not been moved). If there is continuity, then the latch is not going to be the issue. The most likely issue if the door switch has continuity would be the main control WPW10174745.

Michael, Since it appears that the catch is on the door you can try to use a putty knife and get under the catch to release it without having to take the door apart. You will want to go in from the top and the bottom to release the tabs. If unable to get this way then the door panel would need to be removed.
