How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6030941 / W10823719 Surface Heating Element (Top Burner)

Purchased the triple burner and dual burner element. I added my model of stove and I was able to pull up diagrams of the stove parts. The parts were easy to find using the diagrams and the burner elements were marked 17 & 15 so I placed my order. Parts were here in a couple of days. The tricky part was figuring out how to get into the stove top. I was a few youtube videos to see different replacement. My husband and I got the stove top off and flipped it over on the counter. We looked at the wires and connectors and they did not exactly match. I called the number on the packing slip that came with the burner elements that said if you need help call. Michael answered and was a great help. I sent Michael photos of both the old connectors and new. Micheal was able to walk us through matching the connector wires to the proper location. We were able to put the top back plug in the stove and both burners are working great. 

I bought the element after reading that this is the most likely problem instead of checking the switch first. Then followed the directions that I pulled off the internet. I had it fixed in less than 25 minutes. The hardest part was making sure all of the wires were correct and the screws were not overtightened. Very easy job. I don't know why I waited so long to do it. Thank you 

I turned off all power to the range. Took the burner out by disconnecting all lead wires and tested with a continuity meter. The inner ring showed now connection meaning it was burned out. I ordered the triple element through ApplianePartsPros who had it on my doorstep in TWO days. Not only that , but their site provided a video illustrating the process. We ordered the 2 new burner units on line. They were delivered in less than 2 days and my husband installed them in less than 30 minutes! We were very pleased with the service and ease of ordering. 

Checked the Internet to see if anyone had that problem! Turns out I had to replace the element. Also checked the Internet to see how to replace it. Next, of course, I checked the Internet again to shop for the element. AppliancePartsPros had the best price. Ordered it online one morning, and could not believe it was delivered to my door the NEXT DAY! I set aside some time to work on it, but things went smoothly. Kept track of the wires as I removed the clips with a small pair of pliers. I should have had a small wrench for the nuts holding the bottom of the burner! Much easier than I thought it would be. Flipped the breaker back on, and lo and behold, no sparks or popping! Everything works! Janet

Bought two new burners and installed them. The problem with one burner was that the terminals (electrical contacts) had been redesigned slightly, as the range itself is probably at least 10 years old (Maytag Model MES5875BAB). Specifically, the terminals protruded about 1/2 to 3/4 inches farther than on the original burner. It was not easy to see, but that difference put the terminals in direct electrical contact with the grounded heat shield, and that short caused the controlling switch to burn out. I bought a new switch and modified the heat shield in such a way that the burner terminals would no longer touch the shield. I also did a little sheet metal work to replace the part of the heat shield I had to remove but to still provide the necessary shielding. There was room enough between the shield and the heat-protected printed circuit boards to allow me to do that. The other larger burner presented no problem during replacement. 

Had to take the side panel off halfway to sneak the old hinge out and replaced that with a new one. The hinge only had two screws so that was easy. I had to take two screws off the front to lift the glass top off. Flipped it over and easily replaced the old element with a new one. 

I replaced the surface element. 

I sent this as an email. Hi Vincent Thanks for the help with the element yesterday. With the schematic, I was able to find the problem. Long story short, after checking voltages and continuity, everything checked out ok up to the new element. I did continuity checks on the terminals on the original and compared those results to the same checks on the new one. They were different. What???? I took the cover plate off of the old one and took a picture (attached). It showed the common hot line connected to the terminal next to the element on the far side of the block. The new one required this connection on the same side and the common pickup point. If you run into this problem again, hopefully this will help.
