After opening up the gear housing, I was able to see that the worm follower gear had the teeth worn off of one side. So I ordered a new gear (the other gears appear to be in great condition), some grease and a metal gear housing (the old plastic one was in good shape but I was trying to head off any future repairs) and then I waited. Oddly, the 3 parts each arrived separately and a week apart but they were all good upon arrival. I put everything back together and I was very generous with the grease, as it turns out I was too generous. I had a hard time getting the new cover to sit down all the way because. it turns out, the grease was trapping air inside the receiver hole at the top of the housing. After removing grease several times, I finally got it to seat properly. Once it was reassembled and turned on with no load, the gears were making a soft, sporadic clicking sound which I now have to diagnose. I saw online that too much grease can keep the gears from seating properly and they won't mesh perfectly.... sooo, I'm guessing my overzealous use of grease has come back to bite me again. We'll see.....
