How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5665171 / W10528947 Drive Hub Kit

Well at first I thought it might be the tension rods and the belt so I replaced those. That was not it. Then I removed the center agitator, took out the drive basket hub, and notice the the threads on my drive shaft were becoming stripped. This was from using it for so long with it being out of balance. I replaced the drive shaft, transmission and that didn’t full fix my issue. The spin cycle was still shaking and not fully drying the clothes. So I then noticed that the plastic on the basket drive shaft looked like it was stripped and I noticed when I held onto the outer basket the inner basket still had movement. It wasn’t a lot, but I thought to myself this must be the real issue. I replaced that part and now it’s like I have a brand new washer. If I had known and caught it early it would have saved me $200 and a lot of time. So if you are having similar problems start there first. Good luck. 

I replaced the washer plate and drive hub because my Maytag Bravos washer was not agitating at all due to the gears/teeth being worn down. It was a bit difficult to remove the old washer plate, which from what I understand from researching the repair has been pretty common with most other people who have attempted the repair. Once I was able to remove the old parts, the rest was a breeze. Very easy. I do recommend getting a set of picks to get under the wash plate to be replaced in order to pull it out. It’s tricky and does require a little brawn to pull it up, or at least mine did 

The washer was running fine and just as quiet as the day we bought it. So, I could only think of build up being between the inner drum and the outer drum. I dismantled the washer to the point of pulling the inner drum out. Once I got the agitator out, I could tell the seal between the two drive shafts was leaking grease into the unit. So ordered a new transmission and drive hub kit. Replaced them, calibrated the unit and tested for leaks. About 5 loads of laundry in and no problems. 

Called Appliance Parts Pros and again they nailed the problem on the head-replaced hub under agitator-machine now works fine-they have helped me repair 3 different appliances in my home. 

After replacing the actuator and cam with no results, I changed the hub under the agitator plate and that did the trick. 

Using advice on Appliance Parts Pros, I ordered a new drive hub kit. The wash plate (agitator) was difficult to remove. Used advice off of online videos to slide a thin strap under it, and wiggle and pull. Also used penetrating oil sprayed into splined shaft area. I was then able to access the drive hub and found the splines completely stripped out on this nylon hub. The hub I had ordered would have fixed the problem, but the splines on the gearcase output shaft were also damaged from the nylon hub slipping on it for so long. I ended up ordering a new gear case, and installed it along with a drive clutch kit, drive belt, and the previously mentioned drive hub kit. I basically ended up replacing most of the drivetrain. This was not super easy to do but is possible with some mechanical skills and watching repair videos on Appliance Parts Pros and other online video sites. Washer operates like brand new now. Very pleased with all aspects of my interaction with A.P.P. 

The machine had been banging on spin and getting worse. The machine is in constant use in our house and ultimately failed when the drive hub became completely worn and the machine would not spin any longer. Hub replacement was pretty simple. I replaced the suspension rods from the top, it is a little tricky to do that way because of space. I removed the front cross brace to give myself some room. Popped the old ones out, and installed the new ones. I then used the hook end of one of the old ones to “hook” the new one, and pull up through the bushing as high as I could, Then placed a vise grip to hold it. I then installed the new top hardware and lowered the rod into the new bushings. $103 or so repair versus the cost of a new washer 

Ordered new hub. 

Gear teeth on the drive hub for my Whirlpool Washer were stripped smooth making it so basket would not spin. Ordered part from Appliance Parts Pros and it arrived next day before noon. Went on a little tight but I thought nothing of it. Went to tap in the drive fork and broke it in a way that the the broke of part could not be removed without destroying the hub. No problem, it was 100% completely my fault, I should not have forced it. I cut the hub off and ordered another new part which arrived the next day around 10:00 AM. Went to work with WD40, a wire brush and a wire wheel on my drill. Looked closer and found a couple chewed up gear teeth on the shaft. Touched them up with a file. The new part slid right on and the retaining fork slid right in. Very satisfied with the part and the speed that it was shipped. Even doing the repair twice saved me a LOT of money. Will definitely order from Appliance Parts Pros if I need more parts. 

Remove center cap, then 7/16 bolt, lift out wash plate, remove 6 screws, replace with a new hub, and locking clip.
