The drive train of this Maytag washer has a transmission with a spline on the washtub side that engages with two other parts, the agitator, and the drive hub. The first time I had trouble was when I realized the agitator was slipping due to a worn spline. So I replaced the agitator. But that only allowed the partially worn transmission shaft spline to wear further and prematurely wear out the agitator spline again. After having the unit fail again I finally replaced the transmission, the agitator, and the drive hub all at the same time so all spline parts had brand new mating surfaces. I also got a new bolt that holds the agitator down as it has some special compound on it. Seemed like the thing to do since I was going all out to resurrect this machine. Runs like a charm now. Hopefully it serves many more years.
