Wanting to be sure, had a Sears service tech check it out. Turns out it WAS the front panel. Sears wanted $420 to fix. Too much. So I paid the $59 service charge and ordered the part from AppliancePartsPros.com after doing an internet search. Sears wanted $205 for the part and it would take a week to get, AppliancePartsPros.com cost $143 including shipping. Other sites wanted more.
I ordered the part on August 24 and it was delivered by 8am August 26. I was busy that day but started the install the next day. It was super easy-six screws on the inside of the door removed the front panel, pried 2 flanges loose, unplugged the cable and installed everything in reverse order. Under 10 minutes. Then I realized the new panel did not come with the door handle insert so I had to remove it from the old panel (one screw, two clips) an remove the new panel again to install the handle insert, then everything back together in a couple of minutes. By the way, I turned off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher before starting and flipped it back on when done. Started a wash "Normal" cycle and it worked!
Thoughts-I didn't need to call Sears, the Maytag instruction troubleshooting guide had it figured out, so I second-guessed myself out of $59. However the entire repair was $59 plus say $143 for a total of $202. Less than half what Sears wanted. Oh, and add $8 for the cheapo Walmart star bit driver set for the screws.
