How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4011179 / 12112425 Pump And Drive Belt Kit

I replaced the Washer Drive Motor and both belts. It was an easy fix and the online video was very helpful. 

This is a common problem on older Maytag washers and is caused by a worn drive belt. I bought this washer and dryer pair in fall of 1983 and had to replace the belts on the washer in the late 1990s. The repair is very easy. Pull the machine away from the wall a few inches, tip it back and place a 2x4 block under the front of the machine. There are two belts on the machine. The lower one (smaller belt) runs the pump and the larger one runs the tub. The motor is on the left near the front and there are a pair of springs that tension the belt. Reach underneath and push the motor towards the center of the machine to relieve the belt tension. Pop the pump belt off of the motor pulley and then off of the pump pulley. The pump is near the front on the right. Do the same thing for the tub drive belt. Put the new drive belt on the tub pulley first and then work it on the motor pulley. The pump belt is next and put the belt on the pump pulley first and then on the motor pulley. Spin the motor around by hand a couple of times to make sure everything is in place and remove the block. 

The collar pin sheared off in the transmission of my Maytag washer. Watching on-line videos of removing the transmission looked like major project. With the front panel removed, you can repair the transmission without removing it from the washer. Remove the front panel, lay the washer on its back, rotate the transmission assembly so the cover is up. Unbolt and remove the cover, put a pan under the transmission and rotate it to drain the oil. Be sure to find all of the collar pin that sheared off, mine broke in three pieces. Replaced pin, refilled oil, cleaned and replaced silicon sealant on cover, bolted back together. Complete job took less than 1 hour. 

Replaced both belts 

Went online ordered the parts watch the video did the install and was finished. the longest part was "since u have the washer out anyways would u mind mopping the floor. maybe u could slide the dryer over quick like get under it too" 

Replaced the belt

Replaced with new belts and adjusted per video on AppliancePartsPros.com 

I ordered a new motor from appliance parts pros. The new motor had a dead short and blew the breaker. I called appliance parts pros and spoke with April, she immediately order another one which came in two days. Thank you, April! The video was very helpful. and the motor is in and my wife is happy! I have used Appliance parts pros several times in the past for everything from dryer parts to frig parts and have had no problems. 

The simplicity of the design and easy access helped me to determine that the semi-transparent discharge pump's internal impeller was not spinning just by removing the front panel. Unplugging the power, turning off the water supply, manully draining the tub and tipping the machine back and keeping it safely balanced were the most physical part of the job. It was easy to remove and replace the two hoses and three screws attached to the pump. I also easily replaced both washer tub and drain pump drive belts at this time. Hoping for another 30 years of use.
