How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6009858 / WP6-3129480 Dryer Drum Roller Axle

Turns out the noise was the blower fan had worn out and was freewheeling on the motor axle. While I had the dryer opened up, I took the opportunity to replace the parts that would likely have worn out in 20 years - bearings, drive belt, rollers. All told less than $100. 

Thanks Appliance Parts Pros. Fixed a Maytag Atlantis with the helpful video and parts. Everything went very smoothly by following the video, easy. Also fixed a leaking water inlet valve unit, access was different than the video, you had to pop the top open on the washer for access. 

After watching the repair videos and purchasing the replacement parts for the dryer. It only took about an hour to replace all the moving parts in the dryer. Now it is very quiet. 

Disassembled dryer and replaced axles. 

The center shaft of one of the drum roller wheels had disintegrated so the roller wheel was moving all over the drum roller axle. I replaced both drum roller wheels and their shafts and lubricated the idler pulley for good measure as it was not spinning as freely on its axle as it should. I had ordered new tumbler bearing kits too, but on inspection, the originals were just fine and I did not replace them. I cleaned up the considerable lint and dust from the inside of the dryer and reassembled it. It now runs whisper quiet like it should. 

Ordered parts from you. Watched a u tube video and had no difficulties repairing my own dryer. Getting parts from you and doing my self save me a few hundred dollars or a new dryer. Never use to attempt things myself. But was tired of paying other people. Watch u tube and go to your site to get parts. Well worth it. And trust me I am not a fix it kind of person... But I did it. Took less than half hour. 

Researched probable causes,ordered new belt only due to age, replaced drum roller supports and axles. Yhe repair video on how to replace the above parts was awesome and made this job very easy 

We ordered rollers and a new belt , that was a little worn out. Vacuumed everything out and unplugged the trapped lint areas. 

Diagnosed the problem as an old/malfunctioning drum support roller. I had a problem finding a repair video or manual for my specific dryer (the Maytag Performa, MDE3500AYW, probably purchased around 2007-2008) which made proper disassembly difficult. But I finally found Appliance Parts Pros' excellent video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTH4yJCoM0g The video was incredibly helpful, and made the repair simple. The most difficult part was removing and later repositioning the belt around the pulley, as it was hard to see what I was doing. Overall, though, it was doable. I tried the screwdriver trick (shown in the video) to get the snap ring off, but ended up purchasing snap ring pliers. Roller replacement was easy after that. I also took the opportunity to vacuum up all the lint and dust and other stuff inside the dryer. I also purchased the dryer drum roller axle, but did not end up needing it as the existing axles were undamaged. Our dryer now runs without a single squeak! It took about an hour to take the dryer apart, replace the rollers, and reassemble.
