How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6009858 / WP6-3129480 Dryer Drum Roller Axle

I honestly didn't even know I had a bad drum and axle until all were torn apart. I did not think my 20-year-old Maytag dryer would be online.. thank you so much for putting this out there!! I was able to fix this myself!! I am a 50y old single woman!! The video was 10 minutes long, but it took me 5 days, to wait on parts and I had to buy the snap ring pliers! 

Replaced both Axle Shafts, Rollers, and teflon Tumbler Bearings supporting the front of the drum. No grease used, youtube is invaluable. Had to remove the rear access plate to reinstall the drum belt. 

This is the third time I’ve fixed this 15-year-old Amana dryer with parts from here. Same repair about 7 years ago with new drum rollers and belt tension pulley. Also replaced the motor about 5 years ago. I tell everyone about AppliancePartsPros.com, the videos, quick service, and good stock of parts on hand are a no-brainer if you have a little bit of a handy person in you. I also fixed a computer module in an old refrigerator. This place has saved me thousands in repair bills or new appliances. 

I replaced all the wheels. The two Drum Support Wheels (including the shafts) and the Tension Pulley. 

Went to your website and found that 36% of the time the squealing, on start-up, was from the drum support rollers. So watch the video you provided and removed the drum. I found the dryer drum roller axels to be scored, so order the axels and the rollers. Additionally, I found my dryer drum belt to be frayed. So I ordered all 3 parts on Monday afternoon and had all parts delivered by Wednesday morning. Since I followed the videos provided to remove the parts, I felt confident that I could replace these parts, by watching the videos. I started the repair on Thursday morning and by noon, I had a load of towels drying in the dryer. A new Maytag dryer would cost anywhere from $500 to $750. So an expense for parts of $120, including shipping, seemed like a good investment. And it was! The dryer is functioning like new. Maybe this repair will get another 15 years from this dryer.. could not have done this repair without the spot-on video repair support! 

Well #1 when I removed the Front panel, the center support panel and the drum , I did not find any bad rollers. I checked the belt and it was worn but not a problem. I next checked the idler for the belt tension and did not find any problem with it. I noticed that there was a lot of lent everywhere inside the unit. I checked the blower fan and found out that it was turning on the motor shaft. Our vent to the outside is approximately 12 ft. I found probably 4 or 5 pounds of bird nest inside the vent. It took me about 4 hours to clean out the vent. I am guessing that this has been stopped up for several years. The excess heat probably caused the blower fan to overheat and break at the motor shaft. I ordered new rollers, new roller axles, new idler pulley wheel, new blower wheel and new belt. After putting it back together it sounds like a new machine. 

I have a 33 year old dryer that was making some noise. After taking off the back access plate and confirming that the drum rollers needed replaced, I ordered them from Appliance Part Pros. I have used parts purchased elsewhere before, but you don't know if you are going to get the correct parts and quality all the time. After receiving the new rollers, axles, and retaining clips, I swapped them out for the old ones. The dryer is running so quiet now, you can hardly hear it even when you are in the laundry room. With the price and sketchy availability of new appliances, keeping your old ones in top working condition is more important than ever. 

I followed the video on APP. I took apart the front frame, removed the drum, replaced the belt. I took the time to clean the inside from lint. Then I replaced one axle and the drum rollers. You need to make sure you have snap ring pliers to remove the drum rollers. The Maytag Dryer now works great. 

I took the dryer apart using the videos on AppliancePartsPros.com. I had a suspicion that it was the drum support roller causing the problem (and I was right) but the axle was also worn down quite a bit. It was also causing the drum to be off-kilter. I replaced both the drum rollers and axles and put the dryer back together. The loud noise is gone! Fully fixed. I can’t even hear when it’s running now. 

New rear rollers, rear roller shafts, front slides, rear felt seal, idler pulley. When they croak, I'll replace the motor, electric heater, timer, etc. Much better to replace old machine parts rather than put up with newfake green fiasco machines.
