How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6009858 / WP6-3129480 Dryer Drum Roller Axle

Replaced drum rollers, axles, belt pulley, and the drive belt. Seems to have done the trick. No noise at startup. 

My Maytag DE7500 was old enough that I ordered and replaced the blower fan, motor, idler pulley wheel, idler pulley arm and sleeve, drum support rollers and axles, and dryer drum belt. The motor switch was different on the new motor. I called support and Sally O. emailed me the instruction sheet that showed me how to rewire it. It took about 10 minutes to rewire it. Sally was very polite and helpful. 

Replaced both drum support rollers and axles. While I was at it, I replaced the belt because it was showed some cracking. I also replaced both drum felt seals. 

Followed the video on the site and replaced the drum rollers and the axles, which were rough with corrosion after 10 years of use. Only sustained one horrid sheet metal cut on my hand while trying to get the axles off, as it was a tight fit for at least one of them. Ended up trying many different wrenches to get the nut back on, settling on a short crescent wrench rather than the suggested box wrench. Hard to get the axle to stay put while tightening the nut, try a rubber jar opener or something non-marring during install. Everything else went very smoothly, gave the machine a thorough cleaning while opened up and found years of packed in lint in the blower vanes and down below the lint trap, removal of which definitely helped with dryer efficiency and will likely avoid a fire. 

The roller axle repair did not fix the issue. I installed two roller axles and rollers. Nor did the new belt. Moving on, I changed the belt tensioner and that did fix the issue. 

I diagnosed likely cause on internet, which was worn drum support roller and axle and ordered them. The video was extremely helpful and I even discovered that the person who serviced it ten years ago had actually put some things back incorrectly. When I moved existing rollers one was clearly worn. I replaced the rollers (but not the axles, which is just wiped and then lubed with some white lithium grease). I reassembled and the squeak was gone but I now had a thumping noise. I realized that the very old felt strip on which the drum rested had gotten misaligned. I took front off and realigned and now it is working perfectly and quietly. Also gave me an opportunity to vacuum massive amount of accumulated dust out of the unit. 

Removed the front panel pulled out the drum and found belt broken. Checked the drum support rollers and found one wasn't turning. Replaced both by releasing a snap ring, and pulling off the rollers. The axles was cleaned and rollers were replaced and snap ring reapplied. A new belt was wrapped around the drum and drum reinstalled. A rear access panel was removed so that the belt could be wrapped around the motor pulley and the tension pulley. Panels were reinstalled. 

I changed the drum support rollers and shafts, put on a new drive belt and installed new Teflon front bearings. Dryer is working fine now it Tumbles a heavy load now with no problems. 

New Blower wheel fixed problem, old one had become loose on the shaft and wobbled making the noise. Replaced the tub rollers and belt at the same time. It’s extra quiet now. These older machines will go forever and are easy to keep A1!
