How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6012742 / WP8318084 Washer Lid Switch

Washer was dripping water when not running for a couple of weeks. Figured it was a valve issue. Then one day it stopped filling with water. Wasn't for sure if the issues were related. Followed a hunch and the advice of the site and replaced both the valve and lid switch at the same time. Now I have a perfectly functioning washing machine again. 

I ordered a new lid switch and replaced it. It would have been more difficult without a video showing how to remove the instrument panel. 

My washing machine would continue its cycle after the water filled up with the lid closed. For a while it would eventually come on after five or six minutes. After finally failing, it was a simple repair. I removed two screws to open control panel of the washing machine. I tested the lid switch to verify it was faulty. Then removed the ground screw and swapped it out. It runs fine now. Be aware that if your lid switch stops working with a washer full of water you might need to bypass the lid switch to make the washer drain. The video on this site went through every step.

After troubleshooting the problem I decided the most likely culprit was the lid switch so I ordered a replacement lid switch from appliancepartspro and watched the video posted there on how to replace the switch. The new switch arrived the day after I placed my order which surprised me. I tackled the job the next day following the video instructions and to my surprise the job went exactly as shown in the video. It took me all of 10 minutes to complete the repair and the washing machine is working again.

Bypassed the lid switch to confirm it was the source of the problem, ordered OEM replacement lid switch from AppliancePartsPros and replaced it after watching the video. Very simple repair! Only needed a Phillips-head screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, and a 5/16 socket.
