How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6012742 / WP8318084 Washer Lid Switch

The Lid Switch was malfunctioning. Replaced it with a new one. Working like a champ now. 

Before ordering the new switch, I verified that my old switch was actually broken by testing its continuity when the lid was closed. The switch stayed open even with the lid closed. I even disassembled it and tried cleaning and lubricating it with contact cleaner, but that didn't fix it. The design is surprisingly fragile (more like a thermostat than what I would have expected as an interlock) and it had apparently just fatigued and lost spring tension over time. Ordered new switch which arrived very quickly. Installed the new switch and verified that it DID have continuity when the lid was closed. It works perfectly! 

I diagnosed it by trying to reset, advancing the cycle myself, and finally putting 12 cans of Campbell's chicken noodle soup on the lid in a bag. With the soup, the washer operated correctly, so it was the lid switch rather than the timer. I followed the nice and easy-to-follow video by AppliancePartsPros.com. It worked like a charm. I replaced the Direct Drive Washer Pump and Lid Switch. 

Replaced Lid Switch - Very easy. 

Removed the panel clips, under the panel is the lid switch to be replaced.

Watched the video and did the repair. Tool-less than 5 minutes total. Took longer to scoop all the water out by hand than replace the part.
