How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6013514 / WP8577274 Thermistor

Saw the video on Appliance Parts Pros and saw that my problem was the Thermistor. Watched the video on how to replace it and ordered the part that day. APP shipped that same day as advertised and I had my part by the third day. Very efficient and speedy! Part was easy to replace per the video and now our 18 year old Whirlpool Dryer is up and running. Saving my wife from going to the Laundry. Replaced the ignitor. Works like a charm better than it had in awhile, so I guess the ignitor efficiency was diminished for some time. Should’ve changed it sooner, so will know this for next time. The repair took longer than it should have because I didn’t recall how the bracket went in and it is difficult to get to allowing only one hand. Once I figured out the bracket it only took one hand though. Tips: General - take pictures before you remove something and keep all of the hardware. Needed a sheet metal screw from original bracket. Ignitor - attach ignitor to bracket with long screw provided and screw in 1/4-in sheet metal screw to bracket a turn or two to stay in bracket. Bracket has a tab that goes in a slot and a sheet metal screw. Place bracket in position inserting tab into slot and hand tighten screw. Then use small socket wrench to finish tightening. In the end only needed to remove two sheet metal screws on lower front dryer panel and the two screws for the ignitor. The ignitor plug is shaped so it can only be plugged one way, which helps a lot. The dryer had a lot of lint build up inside, which took a long time to clean out. Really need to do this regularly. Manufacturer recommends every two years. 

Bought a dryer repair kit, with rollers and belt, plus hot surface ignitor, flame sensor, limit switches, and coils for gas valve. The tutorial video for the rollers and belt was excellent. Really made the job easy. 

Per instructions on video, all components checked "continuity" except the thermistor, i forgot, first I cleaned the exhaust duct, brushed out of the solid metal duct, two fists full of lint, vaccumed a little lint inside the dryer, ordered the thermistor, I worked under the drum, did not remove it, a Whirlpool Cabrio, tested the new part, same "not continuity", installed and no improvement. Then I changed the factory default sensor cycle settings from the minimum time to the next longer setting, 15% more time. And helped a little. By the way , when checking the components, I first removed just one wire, but hour later, to be sure i removed both wires and tested, but got the same results, so not necessary to take pic and remove both wires to test. I wonder if the heating element could test ok , but still not heat entirely. And But now I feel more confident that I could repair it. Did have difficulty removing the front lower panel, it took two putty knives , one on each side at the same time , and a good deal of force to pull it off. 

Tested the heating element, no resistance. Order a new one and installed it. Replace all sensors and installed them while I had the dryer apart. Working great. 

Replaced the heating element, dryer thermal fuse, thermal cut off and dryer thermistor. For trying to repair for the first time, the job was not very difficult. Hardest part was replacing the dryer thermal fuse and dryer thermistor because of their location. Had to remove the cover for the dryer lint screen. 

Checked element for continuity. Was broken in side. Checked thermistor it was ok. Ordered parts-was here in 2 days. Parts replaced fixed problem. I like the videos to show how to replace parts very informative. 

I checked the thermal fuse for continuity, it was blown. Since my wife reported an over-temperature condition before the failure, I thought it would be wise to replace the thermistor at the same time as they're right next to each other, and not expensive. Contrary to some YouTube videos, both can be replaced by simply removing the lower front cover. You do NOT need to take the machine apart like some of those videos do! 

Replaced a thermal fuse inside the unit. 

Unplugged electric dryer. Replaced thermistor, thermostat and thermal cutoff. Need to take care - scraped skin off on sharp sheet metal. Took about an hour in total; hard to reach 1/4" sheet metal screws holding in components, but basically very simple.
