How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6006166 / WP2198202 Refrigerator Temperature Control Thermostat

I replaced the cold control. Removing the plastic protector on the tubing was easy. Getting it on the new one required some WD40. The refrigerator now seems to be working but it is off more than I realized in the past. Foods and ice are frozen so it is working. I did not install the defrost unit as I think the cold control was the issue. 

I removed all the food and cleaned up the mess then noticed it was running again and cooling. I left it empty except for a plastic cup of water in the freezer, which froze solid. The next morning, it had thawed again so I knew I couldn't trust it with food. The machine fired up when I twisted the thermostat and cooled back down normally again. I ordered the thermostat, replaced, easy to do, and now I have a working refer again. The unit was about 5 years old when it failed. 

I replaced the thermostat by watching the video provided on the website. It was exactly as described in the video and so far it seems to be working properly. 

I replaced the thermostat with the one I purchased from you 

Replaced the thermostat and the kick on compressor capacitor. 

Replaced the cold control. Super easy. Took about 20 minutes even with dog interruptions. 

Replace the thermostat. I used the instruction video on the web site. It is easy to dissemble it. However to reassemble it took some trial-errors. When I reassemble it, then I realized that I don't need to unscrew every the screws. You would have to line up components to put screws back on. You will need to line up the freezer temperature control with the lever that connects to an opening of the freezer. It took me 4 tries to reassemble but overall it is not a difficult job. 

Replaced Cold control thermostat 

Installed the new thermostat. Only difficult part of the fix was feeding the capillary tube through the existing rubber tubing. Tight fit. Hard to get the full length of tube onto the capillary tube without bending it too much 

Repair was exactly as shown in the video on the website. About a half dozen screws, and it took maybe 20 minutes. The only tough part was sliding the plastic sleeve onto the new stat w/o kinking the tube. Maybe some lubricant (graphite or soap) would be a help. Overall, I saved an $800 fridge with a $70 part.
