I researched the cause of the sounds, identified the parts which needed replacing, which in this case were the idler pulley assembly, and the drum support rollers. I chatted online with appliancepartspros to find out how many rollers my dryer model needed. I studied the schematics at this site and watched the video tutorials, and was able to successfully complete the repairs. When I started the dryer it once again hummed quietly (music to my ears!). One thing I learned, my dryer is about 6 years old, and I had to remove the front and the lint trap. I am glad that was required as I was able to use a shop vac to thoroughly clean all the lint and dust which had accumulated in the trap and in the bottom of the dryer (the videos use very clean models, set up in the middle of a large work space).
HELPFUL TIP: Between working in a confined space, allowing time to assemble the tools needed, cleaning and being unfamiliar with the process, the time estimates for repairs are grossly understated in the tutorials. What they estimated to be a 25 minute repair took, realistically, several hours, start to finish.
