How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985817 / W10820043 Basket Drive

First I bought a Clutch Assembly to fix a noisy spin cycle in a Kenmore 500 washer. I found a worn Basket Drive when I had the washer apart so bought this one along with the Spanner Wrench. The bottom of the Basket Drive was worn and could not hold the circlip. I replaced both the Basket Drive and Clutch Assembly. The washer runs and sounds great. The How-To video was very helpful. 

Replaced the clutch basket. The hardest part was getting the drum off, took an air hammer to loosen. most of the time was spent cleaning the machine, The repair was easy enough but could not have done it without your video! Thanks!. 

My washer had a weak sometimes no spin condition. I determined it wasn't the timer as it was doing it's pause for 3-5s to allow the cam to drop to engage spin mode. I didn't want to take it apart and wait days for parts so I just ordered a basket drive (which comes with clutch kit as well), motor coupler & drive block . It turned out it was just the clutch which came with the new basket drive. The repair video made it super easy to perform the repair, most of the time was spent cleaning all the gunk off the bottom parts so you could get at the bolts to remove the parts. Since most new washing machines get terrible reviews, we decided to basically rebuild our existing one. The transmission was leaking oil onto the floor, sometimes the machine would smell hot. Otherwise it was still working fine. Since I was to have it all apart, I decided to also change the clutch, brake and water pump. I was also able to thoroughly clean the inner and outer drums since they were quite gross with old soap scum and God knows what. Removing the outer cabinet was the trick to making the job much easier. The how to videos are great and are an absolute must for anyone who wants to try fixing it themselves. I was impressed with how quickly the parts arrived. I ordered the parts on a Thursday evening and received the parts two days later on Saturday! The machine is much quieter now and is working great. Hopefully we will get many more years of service from this machine. 

Started with motor coupling. paid extra for quick shipping. Was worn a bit but not broken & did have the metal inserts. Still no spin. I ordered a clutch, 2-day shipping, no spin. Decided to order both basket drive & neutral drain transmission, even though the transmission was spendy I didn't want to just change basket drive & still maybe have no spin. I couldn't find any info about diagnosing whether or not the transmission was functioning or not & did not want to take apart the machine for the 4th time or disassemble tranny. I was a little worried when the transmission shaft was not fitting thru the top of the new basket drive due to the springs on the outer tub moving around, causing me to not align the lip on the top of the shaft perfectly. All is well now, spinning & quiet. The repair videos are great & 2 day shipping for an extra $15 is reasonable, even for a bulky item(s). 

Replaced the clutch assembly and basket drive. Now it spins out clothes as well as it did when it was new. This repair brought new life to my 17 year old washer. Thanks to Jake for the guidance on applianceblog.com! 

My husband took it to the garage took it apart put in all new parts we ordered from AppliancePartsPros.com they are very good people to deal with we got them overnight and got washer back on the line the next day. 

I ordered a washer drive block,spanner nut,basket drive and a spanner wrench. I got everything from you guys and it was easy. I watched the videos on how to change it. The spanner wrench is worth the price. It made the job 100% easier. 

I took out both tubs from the washer machine including the agitator. Then I removed the water pump, motor and transmission. The basket drive bearings were worn so I replaced those as well as the brake components and springs for them. There was a missing pad on the frame that was allowing the frame pieces to hit each other during the spin cycle. I replaced all 6 pads. I also used a grinder to remove rust on the bottom of the inner tub and repainted it. I removed grease and scum from the outer tub that was coming up into the washer. I also replaced the springs on the bottom of the outer tub to help with balance. Finally I replaced the Bell drive that is in the agitator. 

Watched several repair videos on YouTube produced by AppliancePartsPros.com for this model Whirlpool washer (videos quite well done). Purchased parts from AppliancePartsPros.com; order correctly filled and parts arrived by FedEx within two working days. Performed repairs as instructed. "Plastic welded" holes in poly outer tub using similar plastic (PP) using a cheap soldering iron - worked perfectly, saved >$150 for new tub. Washer now like brand new. Suggestion - buy the spanner wrench, its well worth the $13.
