The Basket Drive is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washers. The basket drive is responsible for rotating the wash basket during the cycle.

Common causes of a bad basket drive include regular wear and tear, mechanical failures, or damage from overloading the washer. These issues can prevent the washer drum from spinning or agitating properly.

Symptoms of a bad basket drive can include:

  • The washer fails to agitate or spin clothes properly
  • Strange noises are heard coming from the drive area
  • The basket no longer rotates smoothly
  • Excessive vibration is noticed

This genuine Whirlpool OEM replacement part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Basket Drive (Part Number: OEM17957460)

Russ for Model Number WTW5560SQ0

Getting hard jolting stops after spin cycles. Seems like brakes locking up. I've done almost a complete rebuild on this 16 year old Whirlpool but never replaced brakes/basket drive. I've read that trying a small amount of silicone brake lube on the inside wall of the basket drive is worth a try. Just wonder what your thoughts are and what could be causing the really hard stops (sometimes sounding like it's going to come through our floor) after spin cycles. It happens after wash/rinse spins as well. On occasion it won't do the hard jolting stops but it's almost all of the time. Thanks for any suggestions.

Joseph, Based on the information given the issue is likely the gearcase. Transmission [3360629]

Have an issue where the washing machine will pump out the water after the agitation cycles (wash and rinse) but there is no spinning of the basket during the pumping out. If I lift the lid during the pumping out of the water I notice the basket engaging/moving just slightly. Then upon closing lid the machine gently spins while pumping out water. I purchased many parts for this machine over the past months from Appliance Parts Pros but I did recently install an 'open box' transmission and I'm wondering if the transmission (3360629) could be faulty or slightly different than my broken original to cause this slight glitch? Also wondering if the clutch slipping could cause this or even a lid switch issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

RB, The loud noise during the pump out could be from the neutral transmission gears or from something that may have gotten into the drain pump. The motor should only activate the agitator during the rinse cycle based on the timer chart. What it should do is spin out the clothes, go into a rinse mode where the slow windings are activated to agitate the clothes once full, pause the motor so the neutral can engage, drain the water out, pause the motor again so that the neutral can be disengaged, and then go into a spin. The momentary pauses are used like a clutch in a vehicle so that the internals of the transmission can shift into place.

Stephen, the transmission would need to be checked to ensure it has seated fully and that there is not a misalignment occurring. If it checked good, it is likely that there is an issue with the transmission. If the enamel coating on the top of the housing was not removed, this can cause pressure build-up which can result in failures. Ensuring this enamel coating is removed would be recommended.

Geez, this would most likely be caused by the clutch 285785 failing and not engaging the basket drive properly.

Jason, Check that the agitator is not stripped out and then the issue would likely be in the gearcase assembly.

Dave, The drive basket is rebuildable and would require several parts to do it. The only problem is there are parts that are no longer available which is why you would want to get the complete assembly.

John, the spanner nut WP21366 would need to be inspected to identify if it has loosened and the drive block WP389140 inspected for any corrosion that could allow it to slip. If they are good, the basket drive W10820043 would need the brakes inspected to identify if they are slipping or have oil residue on them. If there is oil, the transmission 3360629 would need to be replaced and the oil residue cleaned thoroughly.

David, The gearcase is not an oil/water mix and you will want to either try to change out the seals or replace the transmission.
