How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP5985817 / W10820043 Basket Drive

My parents have the older 80 series washer and dryer that gets used way more than a consumer washer and dryer was ever meant to be used. The washing machine finally said im tired. During the spin cycle it was making a really loud squealing noise and during the agitation cycle it would barely agitate the clothes. So i ordered the basket drive to get rid of the squealing during spin cycle and noticed the dogs on the cams were warn and werent grabbing so ordered the whole cam kit to be safe and some extra dogs for the future. Now it agitates the clothes like a new washing machine and no squealing. The clutch and the coupler i order and replaced just to be safe because it seems to be a common part that goes out on these things. Parts fixed all the problems that i was initially out to fix, but when i was testing it out i noticed that sometimes it wouldnt spin the clothes dry, but if i opened the washing machine and closed it again. It would spin them dry. So apparent the cycle isnt stopping to allow the transmission to reverse and send the machine into spin. Im assuming its a timer problem, so that will be the next and last part i change and everything should be like new again. My dad is definately happy. Only spending a couple hundred bucks to fix the washing machine we have instead of spending a couple grand on new front loading washing machine and dryer like my mom would prefer. 

Watched Video on Appliance Pro and it was SPOT ON. Fixed the washer in 15 minutes. Replaced the washer drum DRIVE BLOCK. THANKS APP.COM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

Disassembled the machine and replaced the defective parts. 

I searched forums and found the likely culprit was the clutch. The Appliance Pros video made the job approachable and directed me to the part I needed right away. The forums also mentioned that replacing the basket drive was typically done at the same time as replacing the clutch, so I bought the more expensive part that also included the clutch. I followed the steps in the video exactly as shown. Everything was perfectly clear. Had I not had the video, I'm sure it would have taken many hours and I would have been stumped at several places. While I had it all apart, we washed everything too, so the unit is like-new inside and out. I noticed some rust on the drive stem of the inner basket, so I suspect we'll be replacing that next. 

The APP DIY videos helped a lot - but I ran into several 'issues'. The tub and drive-block did not come off of the basket-drive shaft as easily as shown on the video. After 28-years of steady use, scale and gunk and corrosion had 'welded' the steel/aluminum/brass parts together. What finally worked was turning the spanner nut upside down and using a three-arm gear-puller to lift the drive-block and tub off of the basket-drive shaft. Corrosion on the basket-drive shaft also made its removal difficult. I eventually got the basket-drive out using a 5-lb hammer with a wooden block and then a wood dowel. The washer is good as new. The new drive train is running and even quieter than before. A note of thanks to Michael: the basket drive was damaged in shipping, poorly packed. One call to APP had a replacement on its way. The expedited shipping helped save my marriage. Thank you!!! 

Started by replacing the drive clutch, but found that the spin tube bearing was gone and the spin tube itself was worn to the retaining clip. Purchased the basket drive assembly and tub wrench (which is needed to remove the tub and spin tube). Purchasing the assembly instead of individual parts saves time and money. Followed the dyi video which has every step needed to do the repair. I took extra time to clean the inner and outer tubs. My 20+ year old Whirlpool washer is back in service. 

Researched typical causes for this problem online and replaced the part that seemed to be the most likely culprit: the clutch assembly. I purchased this part locally and installed it, but the problem persisted. Enlisted the assistance of a local repair technician who diagnosed the correct parts that needed to be replaced: basketdrive and washer drive block. Ordered these parts through AppliancePartsPros, and much to my amazement, received them the next day. Replaced these parts with the aid of one of the excellent instructional videos on the site, and now my washer is working again. 

My washer would not agitate or spin. A search on the web led me to the Appliance Repair Forums where I posted up the issue. One of the forum's pros accurately diagnosed the problem and posted up the replacement part along with a video on how to replace it. That fix would have taken me maybe 20 minutes tops. Very easy fix. However, my washer has been a great machine and never given me any grief in almost twenty years of use. I did not and still do not believe I could buy a better machine. As such, I decided to replace a few additional parts that typically go down on the machine, this to include the clutch assembly, basket drive, misc hoses and tub suspension parts. I almost replaced the gearbox but mine seemed solid. In that, I took the whole machine apart, inspected and cleaned it and using videos from the Appliance Parts Pros, more or less rebuilt it. All this may have taken me 3-4 hours. The machine works as good as new now and I'm very pleased. Thanks you!!! 

I replaced the basket drive as well as the drive block. Since I did not have the correct spanner wrench, I purchased the wrench in order to facilitate removal of the spanner nut.
