How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP3953640 / 280187 Washer Drain Pump Assembly

Washer drain pump assembly. Thank You for being here when we needed you! :) Saved us from having to purchase a new machine :) 

Removed plastic tube to check for clog & there was nothing. Called tech support for assistance as we could not get the door to release to remove clothes and water. This problem resolved with a manual release of the door. The pump was the problem so we ordered the part and watched YouTube for installation help. We received the pump assembly the next day even though we did not pay extra as it was shipped from a nearby warehouse. 

Checked YouTube initially. Unplug the unit, wait an hour, plug it back in- seemed to work- work a while. Did this several times. Finally I cleaned the filter in the pump (it was plugged with crap), thought the problem solved... but it continued. Solution was to change the pump out- no more problem- ever- at all! Wasn't hard to change it out, APP has a great video showing it done step by step. 

Change pump and shock absorber 

Removed bottom panel. Loosened hose clamps, R & R the drain pump and installed replacement pump and reassembled everything I took apart. Was actually an easy repair. Pictures online made the replacement easy and no surprises. 

Ordered a new discharge pump which was received in short order (two or three days). As always the first thing is to unplug the washing machine. The front lower cover was removed and put aside. The plastic carrier for wiring was loosened to provide room to remove the pump. Placed a towel under the pump, there will be leakage. Unplugged the power to the pump. Loosened the clamps and hoses to the pump. The front mounting point had a torx screw to remove and the old pump could be pulled forward and removed from the washer. Reverse the process and in another ten mins. your done. We had no idea how loud the old pump had gotten until now. The washer is as quiet as when new. 

I ordered a new drain pump assembly and installed it. The problem is now fixed! I had replaced the motor in Nov 21 with a cheap $22 motor from another supplier but that failed in Jan 24. 

REPLACED THE WASHER DRAIN PUMP. 

We ordered the drain pump and also the water valve assembly. Found the pump clogged with a few items, was super quick to replace, following the video instructions (although our pump didnt come with instructions, so thankful for the video) and the water valve also took less than 10 minutes to replace!! Super easy and the parts came within 3 days! 

I ordered the OEM replacement part from AppliancePartsPros.com and installed it.
