I typed in my Maytag machine model number which took me to two sites with clear diagrams and videos of door spring replacement. Also AppliancePartsPROS.com appeared, which offered parts.
Week one (Monday): with a little difficulty, and being very conscious of wiring and tubing, I pulled the washer out and discovered there was only one spring with connector installed, on the right side, but places for another set on the left. Neither spring or connector was broken, but I ordered two springs and two connectors to be on the safe side, thinking the spring had become weak.
Week two (Sunday): with tools and new parts (delivered on Friday) in hand, I removed the one existing spring and connector and replaced them with new parts. The door wasn't right yet, so I installed the second set of parts on the left side. These installations were not too difficult, but they must be done very carefully, to avoid damage or being hurt.
With both springs in place, the door opened and closed perfectly.
The machine is on a wood floor, so sliding it back in place took a little muscle. This, too, must be done carefully to avoid damaging the new parts.
I did not disable the electricity or water.
