After cycling the breaker, still no heat. Didn't find online how to run diagnostic tests. (Discovered too late that the docs for running diagnostics were a pamphlet left inside the dryer's control housing--try looking there). After reading various stories on AppliancePartsPros.com, decided to order heating coil, thermal fuse, and thermistor and see if those fixed the problem. Could be it was just the heating coil, but as long as I was going to the trouble of doing this myself, it was worth the extra $25 to do the thing once and replace the other possible culprits. Videos were extremely helpful, as I had no ready idea how to disassemble the dryer. The ones posted here are for a much earlier model than my Kenmore Elite, but other videos on youtube helped quite a bit in figuring out differences. Glad I took pictures on my phone of all wiring assemblies prior to disconnection so I knew how they'd go back together. Even with the helpful videos, that's added confidence.
Likely a backed-up dryer duct was the root cause--remember to clean those ducts at least annually! I was frankly terrified by the amount of lint trapped in various areas internal to the dryer--very lucky we didn't have a fire. Spent a while vacuuming that out and replaced the parts. Buttoned it up and everything worked. Probably 3 hours total, taking my time to get to know the machine and give it a thorough cleaning. Could easily do it in an hour next time.
