I went on youtube with the problem and looked at solution videos - I ordered the parts (more than I needed) and at the price it's but better to have and not need than need and not have. After watching the videos it was obvious that I could do the job myself and after the parts arrived I was able to remove the cover and assess what was wrong. Turned out to be a single suspension spring that rusted out. Easy to replace, washer works great. FYI the washer is a Kenmore Heavy Duty 70 series and probably 25 years old.
