IMPORTANT: Defrost heater was more difficult to install around the evaporator coils than the APP installation videos show, but it can be installed. See below.
FIRST: Unplug the fridge/freezer!
I tested the thermostat, mechanical defrost timer, and the defrost heater with a ohmmeter and determined that the heater was bad.

Removed the freezer shelves and back panel, evaporator coils were frozen with ice. Defrosted coil and removed defrost heater connectors, measured no continuity in the heater and ordered a replacement. Also discovered the aluminum retention strap was broken and the heater had slipped down in it's position, ordered and replacement strap. 2. Flimsy - only lasted a couple of months
3. Silicone-bottomed that half the compartments leak after a few uses
