The Cold Control is an OEM part for Frigidaire refrigerators. It regulates the temperature inside the fridge and freezer compartments by controlling the compressor, evaporator fan, and cooling vents. Proper cooling depends on the cold control operating reliably.

Symptoms of a bad cold control include:

  • Fluctuating temperatures that don't stay consistent
  • The refrigerator or freezer running excessively hot or cold
  • The compressor not turning on at all

Causes of failure can be worn over many years of use or damage to electronic components. Without an accurately functioning control, cooling performance diminishes significantly.

This OEM Frigidaire part can also be used on Electrolux, Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, Westinghouse, and Sears/Kenmore.

For Frigidaire Cold Control (Part Number: OEM17411691)

Craig for Model Number FRT21G2NWO

Freezer cold but not enough on all settings with fridge cool but could be better. Compressor rarely kicks on. Coils don’t have ice and underneath of fridge is clean. Seems like cold control doesn’t read the correct temp in the fridge but when I can warm up the fridge and get it to come on it blows very cold. Also checked defrost timer and not stuck in defrost mode. Fridge kept in attached garage but had this problem when outside temps were above 50 degrees. Appliance is 2 years old. My question is can the cold control thermostat lose the ability to read correct temps or possibly get stuck?

1 Answer

Craig, Yes, the temperature control can get stuck and or become out of calibration, but usually not that soon in the lifetime of a fairly new refrigerator. The most likely issue is the fact that the refrigerator is in the garage, attached or otherwise. The temperature variances in a garage are way too large, and can keep the refrigeration components from transferring the heat properly and can cause the refrigerator to operate at less than desirable temperatures. You may have to move the refrigerator into a controlled temperature environment for proper operation.

Back in april we noticed the meat in freezer was not completely frozen. After a few days of watching fridge and freezer temps I ordered a defrost timer and temp control . It was good until now 8 mos. later. Freezer is not freezing food again. We emptied freezer and I can feel heat coming out of upper freezer vent. I am assuming it is in defrost cycle too long? Should I try another timer? Note: I kept thermostats in both fridge and freezer and monitored temps for about one week.

Hello Dave. If the fan is running and you feel heat, it is not in defrost. Sounds like the compressor is failing on the unit. If the compressor builds up pressure, sometimes it does not start until it fully comes down to no pressure. Problem is, the unit will start to warm up inside the unit.

Timothy, It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Loc Ngo for Model Number Kenmore Refrigerator 253.641940K

My refrigerator is not cold at all. Last time my sister turned temperature controls in freezer and refrigerator to maximum, but the temperature in the fridge was not cold. Then I removed everything, cleaned up the fridge and set all controls back to recommended levels. I can hear the fan and pump running, and I can feel the wind blown out from the freezer, but, but it's not cold enough. Could you tell me what is wrong with my fridge?

1 Answer

Loc Ngo, You will want to check the coils in the freezer compartment. Check to see if they are impacted with ice or have a light even full frost pattern. If there is no frost pattern then the issue would be a sealed system issue. If the units evaporator coils are completely impacted then the issue would be a defrost issue. For your unit to check the defrost, you can force into a defrost. To do this you would locate the hole in the bottom of the control housing in the refrigerator compartment. Using a flat blade screw driver, stick it into the hole and turn the defrost timer until it clicks. Let the unit sit for 10 minutes then look at the coils and see if you can see the ice melting from the heater. If not then you will need to check continuity of the heater and the defrost thermostat and which ever one does not have continuity then replace that part. If the ice does start melting then you will need to replace the defrost timer.

Hello Chad. If the unit is the proper temp inside, then the control is good. As for run times, this varies on the amount of times the door is opened and there is no way to estimate this for you. if the inside temp is good, then the run times should be correct on the unit.

Hello Stan. If the cold control is bad, it does not read the temperature properly. Based on the information you provided and the temps, you will need to replace the cold control.
