The Cold Control is an OEM part for Frigidaire refrigerators. It regulates the temperature inside the fridge and freezer compartments by controlling the compressor, evaporator fan, and cooling vents. Proper cooling depends on the cold control operating reliably.

Symptoms of a bad cold control include:

  • Fluctuating temperatures that don't stay consistent
  • The refrigerator or freezer running excessively hot or cold
  • The compressor not turning on at all

Causes of failure can be worn over many years of use or damage to electronic components. Without an accurately functioning control, cooling performance diminishes significantly.

This OEM Frigidaire part can also be used on Electrolux, Frigidaire, Gibson, Kelvinator, Westinghouse, and Sears/Kenmore.

For Frigidaire Cold Control (Part Number: OEM17411691)

Ted for Model Number frigidaire FRT18L4JWF

Own this fridge for 2 1/2 years . We keep it in our weekend house in the kitchen plugged in and the room is maintained at 50 degrees. When we open the fridge sat. morning to load for the weekend the fridge temp is about 40 and freezer 20 degrees. While we load it we hear the fan go on and after about an hour the temp reaches a more desireble 34 fridge and -10 freezer. This temp stays good for the whole weekend. Next weekend it gets warm again. We were told it is the cold control . Do you agree?

Ted, The cold control would most likely not be the cause. On top mount refrigerators you cycle the compressor and fan/fans from the food compartment temperature. When the room temperature gets colder than 55 F, you have long off times waiting for the food compartment to warm enough to trip the cold control. This long off time is allowing the freezer temperature to get high enough that food can start to defrost. There is a kit for refrigerators installed in applications where the temperature can go as low as 34 F and still maintain good freezer temperatures. The kit part number is 5303918301 and it contains a heater that mounts in the control box and an instruction sheet advising how to install the heater. The reason it will work the entire weekend is due to the ambient room temperature is elevated to above 55 degrees when you are there and once the temperature drops back down it will cause the issue to arise again.

Hello FG. It sounds like the cold control is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit. The part needed has been permanently discontinued by the manufacturer and we don't know of any source or replacement for the part.

Hello Vickie. If the condenser fan is running and the coils are clean, you have a sealed system failure and will need an HVAC tech to repair the unit.

Hello Paul, I would start with the temperature control 241537103 as long as the door seals are seating properly all the way around both doors.

So I replaced both the Cold Control of Defrot T-stat in my frig. Because a few time the frig and freezer stop cooling all together. The frig was working at the time I changed the parts but now that I installed both parts the compressor is not kicking on. One issue I had was with the cold control the replacement part had an L and C on the wire connections but the original part had no markings. So where was I to place the blue and red connections? I switched them both up and near way seems to work. Help. My order number was 4499583.

Owen, The wires to the cold control does not make a difference which they go to. The cold control is just a open/close circuit. You would want to check to make sure that the defrost timer is not stuck in the defrost setting. To do this you will turn the dial on the defrost timer until it clicks. Once it clicks then the unit should start up and if it does then replace the timer.

Hi, My refrigerator has given me problems in the past on defrosting when I left on vacation during the winter. I found out this was due to the refrigerator not operting in cold temps. Now what is happening is I left for a week on business and set the thermostat for the house at 45. Came back and everything is defrosted. Usually in the past when the house warms up everything starts to work again. Now the compressor and circulation fan will run continuously and a thermometer shows the air temperature (in the freezer section) will fluctuate from 30 to 60 degrees. This will also cause the compressor to get very hot. I have unplugged the frig for 2 hours and the same symptoms occurs after plugging back in. I would like to believe that the temperature control thermostat is malfuctioning but more likely I think the compressor may be going bad and might as well replace the frig (it is already 9.5 years old). What do you think? Thanks for your help.

Hello Jonathan. If the compressor is running, and it is not cooling, it sounds like the sealed system is bad and will need to be repaired on the unit. That requires an HVAC tech to repair the unit.

Bob, We'd have to suspect a room temperature issue, or possibly a defrost problem. At 60 degrees, you're right on the border line for proper refrigerant flow and heat exchange(50-55 dgrs. and the refrigeration is ineffective). Check and make sure the condenser coil and fan motor and blade are clean and free of any debris. Check and make sure there is no frost or ice build up of any type on the back wall of the freezer compartment(this would indicate a faulty defrost issue, and that the freezer door is closed and sealing to the front opening flange.

Hello Chris. The temp outside is too cold and is causing the issue with the unit.
