The Agitator Assembly is an OEM part for GE washing machines. This essential component is responsible for moving clothes during the wash cycle, ensuring thorough cleaning by continually shifting the laundry within the drum. The agitator's design includes fins or vanes that help to circulate water and detergent through the clothes, effectively removing dirt without causing excessive wear to the fabric.

Symptoms of a bad Agitator Assembly include:

  • The agitator not moving or only moving weakly during the wash cycle.
  • Unusual noises like grinding or thumping indicating mechanical issues.
  • Clothes coming out still dirty or less clean than expected, suggesting insufficient agitation.
  • The top portion of the agitator moving independently from the base, known as "stripped" agitator dogs.

Causes of a bad agitator can include worn out mechanical parts such as gears or bearings, a damaged drive shaft, or the agitator becoming detached from the transmission due to loosening of the securing bolt.

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models,

Pro Tip: When replacing the agitator, also consider replacing the agitator coupling (WH49X10042).

Bert Brown for Model Number HTWP1400F1WW

The cheap plastic fins or "dogs" on this machine's agitator keep tearing or snapping off. I don't want to pay $65 to replace the whole agitator, just to have the dogs on that one do the exact same thing, but I also hate to throw away an otherwise working washer just because of the cheap plastic agitator that comes with it. Is there a better-quality plastic model agitator that will fit this model washer, because I would pay more to only replace it once.

1 Answer

Bert, Unfortunately, there would be no other agitator that will work for this unit. The key thing would be to make sure that you are not overloading the machine because this would cause the agitator or dogs to become damaged. There is a coupler under the agitator that you will also want to check to make sure that it is not damaged.

Job, based on the information provided, the agitator WH43X10034 is operating properly but it may be skipping when clothes are loaded in. If this is the case, the correction would be to replace the agitator.

The dual action agitator in my washer rotates back and forth agitating clothes as it should however I noticed the top half with the spiral ramp moves back and forth with the bottom half rather than in one direction to push clothes downward. My understanding was this portion of the agitator was supposed to rotate in only one direction only during wash so the spiral “ramp” looking fins could push clothes downward while the bottom fins rotate in both directions. Is this due to a bad coupler or does the entire agitator need to be replaced? Maybe this is how it is supposed to work? Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

1 Answer

Larry, the top portion of the agitator WH43X10034 should be able to rotate counterclockwise freely and the built-in agitator dogs should cause the top and lower portions to rotate clockwise together. Based on the information provided, the agitator sections have seized up and the agitator would need to be replaced.

The machine worked fine for quite a few years. Then agitator fins began catching and wrapping clothing and finally broke. I ordered a replacement and clothes are still wrapping under the fins and are now breaking again. I assume there is an underlying condition as this did not happen for many years. Although the GE does not list this model for agitators with molded fins, will they fit? I don't use the softener dispenser so that does not need to function.

1 Answer

Mary, it would be recommended that the load is checked to ensure that overloading is not occurring with the laundry as this can cause excessive strain on the agitator fins.

J Smith, If the agitator will not release then it is probably rusted to the coupling. In some instances, these have had to be cut off and the coupler will also need to be replaced.

Lazaro, the agitator WH43X10034 may have worn out where it connects to the agitator coupler WH49X10042 or the coupler may have worn out. Both items would need to be inspected for signs of wear to ensure the necessary item is corrected.

Pam, on this agitator WH43X10034, it comes as a full assembly as far as the agitator dogs go. The reasoning for this is that the manufacturer does not list the agitator dogs as being a serviceable part for this agitator.

I have a GE washer from 1999. The Coupler has gotten stuck inside the agitator. (The bolt head holding it to the bottom of the tub oval thing broke off and the plastic 'teeth' have worn away, so the agitator is useless, even though the oval thingee still 'agitates'.) There appears to be a 'fixed' plastic portion permanently sealed inside the agitator and then the coupler (which I want to replace.) portion that moves up and down a bit inside of that. How can I remove the broken coupler without damaging the fixed portion?

1 Answer

Emma, To get the coupler out you would want to try to use a long flat blade screwdriver and try to get the coupler past the lips that inside the agitator. If you have a long pair of needle nose pliers you could try them to but would be more about prying it out.
