The Magnetron is an OEM part for GE microwaves. The magnetron converts electrical energy into microwave radiation, which heats and cooks the food placed inside the microwave oven.

Over time, the magnetron can wear out or fail due to regular use, electrical surges, or overheating. A malfunctioning magnetron can lead to the microwave not heating properly, reducing its overall functionality and efficiency.

Symptoms of a bad magnetron include:

  • The microwave not heating food at all
  • Unusual noises such as buzzing or humming during operation
  • A burning smell or visible damage inside the microwave
  • The microwave turning on but failing to heat

This OEM GE part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Rbj, It is supposed to drain but better safe than sorry. Go ahead and short out the capacitor with insulated pliers.

Microwave stopped heating. A couple days prior I heard some intermittent sparking when starting. Now just giving a loud humming and no heating. Would like to repair myself but concerned about getting voltage out of the unit/capacitor/magnetron before replacing part. Watched videos on YouTube and suggestions (insulated needle-nose pliers, crossing a pair of plastic handled awls while touching each capacitor connection, etc). Main question: If I leave the microwave unplugged for a couple days, will it drain all the dangerous levels of voltage out of the capacitor and take away the potential of electrical shock. Other question: Out of the three most likely problems (magnetron, capacitor, diode) which would you install first based on the symptoms? Thank you.

Rbj, Leaving the unit unplugged is supposed to drain out the high voltage but better safe than sorry. Go ahead and short the capacitor with insulated pliers. Usually, you will find the magnetron is the problem.

Hello Nicholas, the antenna of the magnetron has arced, the magnetron is replaceable as part WB27X10880, however, first, you have to inspect the inside of the waveguide duct where the antenna goes in as best you can, if the interior walls of the duct show arc marks then the microwave is not repairable, the waveguide is not a replaceable part. the arc marks will prevent the magnetron from working correctly and will in a short time damage it.

Hello Sue. You most likely have a "high voltage" side malfunction. Transformer, diode, magnetron, Capacitor. You will need to be extremely careful if you decide to test the components with a multi meter, Very high residual voltage is present, so make sure you remove power to the microwave and short across the terminals on the capacitor. The magnetron should have a reading of less than 1 ohm resistance across the two terminals, and an "open" circuit between each terminal and chassis ground. The diode/rectifier should have a resistance reading in one direction only, no resistance, or resistance in both directions indicate a faulty diode. The primary winding on the trans former should read approximately 450 Ohms resistance, the secondary winding should read 80 ohms resistance, and the filament transformer should read 100 ohms resistance. If all the readings are proper and in range, replace the magnetron.

Microwave does not power up. I checked outlet for main power with meter and it's good. I checked both of the line fuses for continuity and they are both good. I still have unit mounted under cabinet. How and where do check the thermal fuse and thermal protector? Or what else can I try? The problem began with simply setting a cook time and microwave would run for a few short seconds and then loose all power. It would return with in a few seconds and a message would appear "power interrupted during cook time please reset" I'm not sure where to go to from here.

Hello Craig. Check all connections inside the microwave and see if any are loose or bad. If not, then you will need to order and replace the smart board WB27X11068 in the unit.
