The Charcoal Filter is an OEM replacement part for GE microwaves. It helps control odors within the microwave by filtering the air during the cooking process. As microwaves heat up food, vapors, and smells can get trapped inside. The charcoal filter works to absorb and neutralize these odors before they are released back into the air.

Causes of a bad filter include exceeding the recommended replacement schedule or exposure to extremely pungent cooked foods on a regular basis.

Symptoms of a charcoal filter that needs replacing include:

  • Noticeable odors emitted from the microwave when in use or just after cooking
  • Food taking on smells from previous meals
  • The filter material appears exhausted or completely dark/black

This GE replacement part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

For Ge Charcoal Filter (Part Number: OEM9614505)

M. Micci for Model Number PNM1971SR1SS

Hi. Went to replace charcoal filter for over-range microwave/vent. Owners manual called out PN WB02X10943. Ordered those, but they were too long at 11". Then searched by model # (vs. going by the manual). Site recommended WBO2X10956. Length looks correct (about 9"), but width is 4", too wide for the vent opening which is sub-3". Totally perplexed. Unfortunately, the microwave had no filter in it prior to check/compare it too. (We bought this home recently.) What am I missing? Thanks.

M. Micci, Thanks for the question!!! The filter lays in at an angle and is typically wider than the opening is tall.

Jim, Yes the WB02X10956 / WB02X10956 Charcoal Filter is the correct filter for the model number you supplied. It is located in the air tunnel behind the top vent grille on the front of the microwave. The part is in stock and available at this time. Thanks,

Don for Model Number JVM3670SF001

My microwave has stopped heating at around the same time that the front panel started showing a message that it was time to replace the charcoal filter. I did not associate the two events, but now I am wondering if the microwave has some sort of circuit that cuts the power to the magnetron in the case that the charcoal filter is not replaced. I am also wondering how it even knows that it is time to replace this filter. I opened the microwave and tested several components. I checked three of the thermal switch sensors, and they seem to work. I also checked the fuses. I did not check the magnetron, high voltage capacitor, or the high voltage diode.

Don, The charcoal filter needing to be replaced would have nothing to do with the unit not heating. The unit not heating will most likely be a bad magnetron or the thermostat on the magnetron.
