For Ge Refrigerator Defrost Heater (Part Number: OEM7919469)

Jim, It is possible for the heater to have moisture in it. One way to tell if your heater is good is if the defrost thermostat is cold you can advance the defrost timer and see if the heater come on. If it does not then test the defrost thermostat for continuity and the defrost heater for continuity. If it does come on then you will want to replace the defrost control WR9X502.

Joe, You will want to make sure that the other defrost bimetal WR50X10068 and WR50X10071 is not bad and that the defrost thermistor if the unit has one is not bad. On the evaporator where the unit bimetal is on the right side there is a second limiter which is on the right side as well and is lower than the one at the top.

Hello...I want test for continuity of the defrost heater (part#AP2639820). This element is glass enclosed. So my ohm meter probes must find the ends of the element, where the piece seems to attach itself to brackets. My question is, ..can I test for continuity while the defrost heater is in place?...or, ...must I remove the heater for a conclusive test? So far, I show OPEN continuity, so I assume the part is bad. However, testing is difficult (difficult to see under the coils), and I am not sure whether my test method is appropriate;i.e., whether I'm getting the correct reading. thanks joe

Hello Alice. Remove the back wall out of the freezer and you can access the heater WR51X10038 under the evaporator coils. It is mounted to the bottom of the coils. You may need to melt the ice, if the unit is frosted over, to access and replace the part.

Hello Karen. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater WR51X10038 and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. Hope this helps. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
