Manufacturer Part Number: WR51X10038

The Defrost Heater is an OEM part for GE refrigerators. This part melts away frost that accumulates on the evaporator coils during the cooling cycle. This process is vital for maintaining the efficiency of the refrigerator, ensuring that air can flow freely over the coils to keep the unit cooling effectively.

Causes of a bad defrost heater can include a faulty heater element, electrical issues preventing the heater from activating, or damage to the heater's wiring.

Symptoms of a bad Defrost Heater include:

  • Frost buildup on the evaporator coils
  • The refrigerator or freezer section is too warm
  • The refrigerator is running constantly without cycling off
  • Pools of water or ice on the floor of the freezer compartment

This OEM GE part is also compatible with Hotpoint, RCA, and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Ge Defrost Heater (Part Number: OEM7919469)

1 Answer

Mike, At this time, we are unable to obtain this part. It has been discontinued by the manufacturer & is no longer available. No alternate or substitute part has been recommended by the manufacturer. We are sorry for any inconvenience. It is not recommended to use a heater not designated for your model and if it does not complete the defrost cycle it will freeze up the evaporator and block any cooling.

Paul, based on your post description and information, we agree, the issue is most likely a "glitch" in the main control board WR55X10832 / WR55X10832 Board Asm Main Control. When you remove power, then reapply power, it's similar to "rebooting" your computer. Check and make sure you have a properly polarized and grounded 120 VAC outlet(non-GFIC if possible). Thanks,

Hello Daniel, The lower-rated defrost heater will not be able to produce enough heat fast enough to full defrost the evap coil in the time allowed for a defrost cycle. Once a part has been discontinued by the manufacturer there is no substitute part that will work.

Steve for Model Number GTS22JBPBRWW

Model GTS22JBPBRWW. Freezer cold; fridge warm. Ice forming on back wall of freezer so I have a defrost problem. Swapped bimetals WR50X10068 and WR50X10071 (popped top) but unit still freezing. Continuity of heater element indicated 35 ohms. l tried but could not locate temperature sensor WR55X10025 (pictorial p/n 605) on top of evaporator per picture. Where is the sensor located in this unit? Will advance defrost timer tomorrow to see if defroster turns on.

Steve, This unit will not have a defrost thermistor. The most likely cause for this issue will be the timer which is part number WR9X565.

Brian, This would be a defrost issue and you will want to check the defrost thermostat and defrost heater for continuity. If there is no continuity then replace the part that does not have it. If this checks ok then the issue will be the main control board that is faulty.

John, Unfortunately for this model there is no type of kit that will help against freezing in a refrigerator when the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. These units are designed to operate in temperatures of between 55 and 100 degrees normally.

Bruce A for Model Number Hotpoint HTS18GB

My fridge leaks water out of the bottom after a while that it has been on. The repairman comes, takes the rear of the freezer apart and defrosts the tube that is supposed to drain water into the pan under the fridge. A few weeks / months later I get the same problem. What kind of heater or fix can I have installed so this repair does not need to be done. The repairman says there is nothing to be done and charges me $75 for each visit. Please advise.

Bruce, presumably the drain tube is not clogged or kinked, but there are a few things to check, Make sure the end of the drain tube is properly seated in the drain pan, so the hot air from the compressor compartment isn't migrating up the tube and causing the drain opening to freeze. From there you have a couple of options. You can install a "duck bill" W10841299 to keep the air from migrating. or you can install a drain tube heater kit 819043 to help keep the drain hole in the defrost drain in the freezer from freezing.

Tony, You can check the defrost limiter to see if it has continuity. If it does not have continuity then you would not need to change it out. You will also want to check the defrost thermistor for resistance. The resistance values should be as follows, 42.5K at 0 degrees, 14.4k at 37 degrees and 5K ohms at 77 degrees. If not within range then it would need to be replaced. If it checks good then also check the defrost heater for continuity. If no continuity then replace and if good with continuity and all other components check ok then you would need a new main control board. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Hello Bruce. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. Check and see if there is any frost build up on the back wall of the freezer. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
