The Drum Motor Assembly is an OEM part for LG dryers. It serves as the powerhouse that drives the drum, enabling it to tumble clothes during the drying cycle. This essential component ensures your dryer operates smoothly, providing the necessary torque for consistent and efficient drying performance.

Causes of failure might include wear and tear from prolonged use, overload from trying to dry heavy loads, electrical issues like short circuits, or physical damage to the motor components.

Symptoms of a bad Drum Motor Assembly include:

  • The dryer drum fails to turn, even though the dryer powers on.
  • Unusual noises, such as humming or buzzing, indicating the motor is struggling.
  • The dryer stops unexpectedly during cycles or won't start at all.
  • Decreased drying efficiency or clothes taking longer to dry due to inconsistent drum speed.

This OEM LG part is also compatible with Sears/Kenmore.

Bret, It is very possible that the motor could be the cause. You would want to check all the thermostats for continuity. There are 2 components other than the thermostats which would cause the heating element not to work. First is the motor and second the timer. The best option is to disconnect the power to the unit and access the heating element. Disconnect one wire that is going to the heating element, preferably the one on the thermostat side. Plug the unit back up and using a multimeter you will want to turn the dryer on and test for 120 vac at the terminal on the heater where the wire was disconnected. What this will do is eliminate the heater element itself and the motor. If there is 120 vac at this point then you know the heater is good and the motor is good because the other 120 vac coming through the thermostats is the timer side of the circuit. If there is not 120 vac at that point then you will want to test the other terminal on the heater and check for 120 vac. If there is not 120 vac then the motor would be bad and if there is 120 vac then the heater would be the issue.

Hello Brian, If you remembered to plug the unit back in, have you checked the breaker and verified voltage to the unit? Also, did you reconnect the wiring connector to the door switch? This is common on this model to be overlooked.

Monica for Model Number LG TROMM DLE7177RM

My dryer has been working sporadically. It will turn on and work fine most of the time, but then it will stop shortly after beginning a new cycle and make a clicking sound, two close clicks three times. There is a very slight burning smell. If I attempt to restart the cycle it will just give me the clicking and sit there. If do not turn off the unit, it will restart on its own and continue the cycle as if nothing has happened. The dryer is 6 years old, and I've yet to replace any parts, I assume I'm due for a belt, but don't just want to go spending the little money I have replacing things that aren't broken. I want to get what I need and get it fixed at a minimal cost. I disassembled the dryer and cleaned it out, removing the drum and everything. The unit has nary a speck of lint in there. The exhaust line is clean, and the outside vent is clean as well. The oddest (and most concerning thing) is that I can get it to run, but only if the lid is off. I am a DIYer so I just need guidance on what I should invest in to repair this issue. I'm not finding any info on any of the repair sites that match my circumstances so I'm finally asking this question.

Hello Monica. It sounds like the motor is overheating. Check and make sure the drum is not binding. If not, replace the motor on the unit.

Paul V. for Model Number LG DLG5932W DRYER

My LG dryer which is now 13 years old sounds to be getting louder and a high-low sort of laboring motor noise can be heard. It works and dries and functions ok, but the motor is loud and vibrating. It was a quiet dryer but for about a month now, a loud, vibrating, high low, sounds is present when in use. Whether air dry or heat still loud. Also when the dryer cycle is done and turns off, after about 5 minutes, it will go on for about a minute then shut off and then will continue until I push the power button off. But I think this is a normal function.

Paul, The first thing that you should look at would be the blower wheel and the rollers on the unit. Check the blower wheel for being cracked or having lint build up that has dried on it which could cause it to be off balance and vibrate. The starting for a minute and then shutting off is for wrinkle guard. The Rollers you will want to make sure that they are turning freely and may need to be lubed with a thin coat of lithium grease.

Paul, You will want to access the blower wheel to make sure that there is nothing caught in the wheel that would be making the noise.

Hello Jay. Based on the information you provided, it sounds like the motor is bad and will need to be replaced. Make sure nothing is binding the drum keeping it from running.

Jay, With the dryer motor not correcting the issue you will want to check to make sure that the power cord connection to the terminal block is good and check to make sure that there is not power loss at the power supply when in use. If there is an issue with the wiring then it will need to be corrected. If this checks ok then the control board 6871EL1013C would be the issue.
