For Samsung Washer Balance Ring Assembly (Part Number: OEM12981123)

1 Answer

John, Check the suspension to make sure that it is good. If it is then the spider may be broken.

Judge, while there can be some vibration that occurs when the spin basket ramps up to speed, it would be recommended that the washer level is checked. The next step would be inspecting the counterbalance weights DC67-00749A for any loose bolts or indications of being damaged.

Kip L for Model Number WF42H5200AF/A2

Hi, this is an older model that I bought used...it needed repair. The machine has worked fine but lately it seems to be having more trouble balancing the load during the spin cycle. Sometimes it succeeds and proceeds to a high speed spin. Other times it just gives up leaving wet clothes. Except for very small amount of surface corrosion, the spider arm looks sound. There is no basket wobble nor bearing noise. I've checked the level of the machine and replaced all 4 shocks. It seems the only thing left would be the balancing ring. I removed it and tried to test it. I can hear metal balls moving if I hold it in different positions, but they seem to move VERY slowly. There are no discernable leaks in the ring. Given the age of this machine, could the viscosity of the liquid inside the ring have changed? I can't say with 100% certainty but it seems when I first got the machine running, I could hear the balls inside the ring more distinctly; now I barely hear them. I can't help but wonder if the fluid inside the ring has somehow become too thick (due to age, temp changes, etc.) so the ring is not longer working as it should. Does that sound possible?

1 Answer

Kip L, If the balance ring has become damaged and lost the fluid it has in it then it would need to be replaced. From the description of the issue, it sounds possible that the balance ring has lost the fluid, or it could be an issue with the load. the load should be not too small and not too large and should be of like items...(shirts with shirts - Jeans with jeans - towels with towels) check the user manual for more loading instructions.

Kathy, Thanks for asking!!! The ring would have to be damaged. Balance rings are filled with liquid, beads, etc. The material inside would have to escape for the ring to not do its job.

Julian, For a proper diagnosis, we would need you to please verify the model number from the units' I.D. tag since it will not come up for us as a valid model number.

Anthony, This unit only requires 1 balance ring. The only way to get the balance ring for this unit will be to get the drum part number DC97-21456A.

Joshua, the drive belt DC66-10170B would need to be inspected for any flat spots that could cause the belt to slip and catch. If the belt is good, the next step would be inspecting the basket for any damage to the support under it as well as checking the drive shaft of the clutch assembly DC97-16984B for any wiggle movement. If these things check ok, the failure would likely be in the balance ring of the basket assembly DC97-16990H.

Michael, It would be more likely that the spider at the back of the drum possibly being damaged would cause this issue.

Anthony, Thanks for the question!!! Go back and start with the basics. Make sure the machine is properly leveled and that all the leveling legs are locked properly. Also, determine if the location is suitable. Maybe if used the pedestal has an issue or the floor has too much give. There are many variables in this equation. If you hear liquid at all in the ring then it is likely ok. Hope this helps get to the cause of the issue, good luck, and happy repairs!!!

Don, the balance ring DC97-12135A would be used with the model provided. In regards to if both should be replaced, that would be dependent on if both have failed or not.
