The Belt Tension Pulley is an OEM part for Whirlpool clothes dryers. It utilizes a tension mechanism to maintain precise alignment and contact between the drive belts and motor pulleys during operation.

Symptoms of a failed belt tension pulley include:

  • Extended dry times or inability to dry clothes fully
  • Abnormal noise or vibration coming from inside the dryer
  • Premature belt wear requiring frequent replacement
  • Error codes appearing or inability to start cycles

Causes of a bad pulley can include cracks, defects, or stiffness in the tension mechanism limiting its range of motion from years of operation. Lubricant breakdown within the pulley can also produce excessive friction or noise over time.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Fred, Yes, a high speed high pitched squealing or screeching noise is usually due to a worn idler pulley WPY54414. There are other possibilities, but the idler is most likely. When you have the machine dismantled, you would also want to remove the drum rollers and clean and lubricate the roller shafts and wheel bearings with high speed turbine oil as a preventive measure.
