The Worm Gear is an OEM part for Whirlpool stand mixers. It is integral to the mixer's drive system, facilitating the transfer of power from the motor to the mixing attachment. This gear is specifically designed to handle varying levels of resistance from different ingredients, ensuring that your mixer maintains consistent performance and speed.

Symptoms of a failing Worm Gear include:

  • The mixer not operating at its set speed
  • A grinding or whirring sound during use
  •  The mixer head not turning despite the motor running
  • Inconsistent mixing or the inability to mix stiff doughs

Causes of a bad worm gear often involve strain from mixing heavy loads, which can wear down the teeth of the gear, or lubrication issues that increase friction and heat within the gear assembly.

This OEM part is also compatible with KitchenAid and certain Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Worm Gear (Part Number: OEM18041364)

Pops for Model Number KP26M1XER

Replaced a worn worm follower last year that was sacrificed as it is designed to do. I replaced the worm gear also because it showed a little wear. In a very short time the mixer began to slip again. This time the worm gear was completely destroyed and the follower was not even marked. Are there parts out there that are not heat treated correctly and being sold ? have you had anyone else experience this problem? The follower should be the part to get the wear and fail first. I also used a food grade compliant grease. Thanks

Pops, We are not aware of any known issues with a new worm gear having issues. If everything is lined up properly there should not be an issue with the worm gear getting damaged.

Craig, The worm gear for the model number you supplied is WP9709231 / WP9709231 Worm Gear, the part is in stock and available at this time. The associated parts you may want to consider are: WPW10170080 / 9703560 Front bearing, WPW10170081 / 9703570 Rear bearing, WP9703445 / WP9703445 Thrust Bearing. Thanks,

Sarah, You will want to double check to make sure that you received the correct part and then if you did then check the planetary shaft to make sure that there are no burrs or anything on shaft that would cause the follower to go all the way down. If the shaft is oblonged then the planetary would need to be replaced otherwise just clean off any burrs that may be on it.

Santo, With the issue that you are having you will want to make sure that the pins are in position for the gears and if necessary replace the worm gear.

Joe, No, there is no "special way to align the bushings" just make sure they are oriented correctly front and back and the thrust bearing is installed properly. Are you sure the noise is from the worm gear, and not from one of the other gear clusters ? And do you have plenty of lubrication in the gear case and transmission?

Thomas for Model Number KP2671X

I have a Kitchenaid 6Qt mixer model KP2671X with serial beginning with WL38. I have taken the mixer apart and am in the process of sourcing parts. My motor has an 8 tooth gear and a 53 tooth worm gear. In my mixer the worm follower has failed. I am wanting to replace all the gears while I am in there but I am having difficulty finding the 53 tooth worm gear as everyone has the 60 tooth replacement. Do you have the 53 tooth replacement? The part you keep telling people is the replacement is 9706529, which is the follower gear. I need a part like 3854320 but one with 53 teeth on the round gear instead of 60. to my knowledge the spiral on the gear has stayed the same and the worm follower is the same also.

Hans, The WP9709231 10 tooth gear is the factory substitute replacement part and should fit and work in your mixer. However the 8 tooth gear W11086780 is available at this time. Either part should fit and work in your mixer.
