The Defrost Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This thermostat monitors the temperature of the evaporator coil and activates the defrost heater to melt any frost that has accumulated. This process ensures efficient cooling and prevents ice build-up in the freezer.

You should replace the defrost thermostat if it becomes faulty or damaged. Causes of a bad defrost thermostat can include regular wear and tear, electrical issues, or exposure to extreme temperatures that can lead to malfunctioning.

Symptoms of a bad defrost thermostat include:

  • Frost build-up in the freezer
  • The refrigerator running constantly or not cooling properly
  • Water leaks inside the refrigerator
  • The defrost heater not activating

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Defrost Thermostat (Part Number: OEM18022011)

Todd, A glass of icewater coldest temp will not be cold enough for the thermostat to close. On the side of the thermostat there are numbers on it and one of them is the temp that the thermostat closes and the higher number will be the temp that the thermostat will open. If you are not getting it to that temp which is normally 15.6 degrees then the thermostat will not close. Put the thermostat in the freezer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours if the unit is operating at the moment and then test the thermostat.

Hi Ka. The best thing to do is to shut the control off. Raise the ice maker bail arm. Remove the freezer shelf and the food. Put the food in a covered clothes basket just long enough to clean the freezer inside cavity. Dry all completely with a towel. Turn the freezer on and make sure the evaporator fan motor part # WP4389142 runs. Keep an eye on the floor to make sure there is no drain pan overspill and floor issues. Make sure all food is place in the bins correctly and the door gaskets close correctly. The control(s) should be at mid point. The freezer should be at 0°. the fresh food should be at 37-47°. Thank You.
