The Defrost Thermostat is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This thermostat monitors the temperature of the evaporator coil and activates the defrost heater to melt any frost that has accumulated. This process ensures efficient cooling and prevents ice build-up in the freezer.

You should replace the defrost thermostat if it becomes faulty or damaged. Causes of a bad defrost thermostat can include regular wear and tear, electrical issues, or exposure to extreme temperatures that can lead to malfunctioning.

Symptoms of a bad defrost thermostat include:

  • Frost build-up in the freezer
  • The refrigerator running constantly or not cooling properly
  • Water leaks inside the refrigerator
  • The defrost heater not activating

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Ice maker water valve has been replaced but ice maker will still not make ice. When you press the switch on the front door as if you were filling a glass you can here the ice maker engage and after that you will here it sound as if a valve is activated to fill the ice maker with water but nothing happens. Water on the door works fine for filling glass. Thank you for your help if you have some ideas to check about ice maker not doing what it should.

Charles, Which valve did you replace ? your refrigerator has two valves WPW10238100 / WPW10238100 isolation valve and the WPW10341320 / W10341320 Assembly, Dual Water Valve(inside the compressor compartment). Sounds like the dual valve has failed for the ice maker water supply. When you open the freezer door, observe the LED light on the right side of the compartment. If it is flashing, press in on the lever on the left side, if the light continues to flash, replace the sensor control board W11813704. If the dual valve has been replaced, and the LED light is on , then the issue would be in the ice maker itself.

Radek, It's a "stretch" but yes, it's possible for a defrost bi metal to be intermittent or broken" a lttle bit". We would check the defrost timer or ADC board, first.

Dave, We do not have the exact information for the defrost thermostat but normal on this type is it closes at around 15 degrees and opens around 34 degrees.

Freezer is working fine, refrigerator is not cold enough. Took freezer apart to see what was going on, and coils had a lot of frost, and the fan was having hard time spinning, and the downspout to the fridge was also almost frozen so that the air way was very constricted.. Shut down fridge to thaw out. Put everything back, and the freezer works OK, have it set to recommended setting measured temp inside and was at 28 degrees. The fridge part does not seem very cold, the fan does not seem to blow down very strong, even in the freezer, the fan is on, but appears weak. Temperature in fridge is 54 degrees. What do you think is the problem? Thanks in Advance

1 Answer

John, The recommended freezer setting for a refrigerator is 0 degrees plus or minus 5 degrees. If the freezer is at 28 degrees then it is too warm and would be causing the refrigerator to not get cold enough. The fan slowly spinning will cause this type of effect so it would most likely be the cause for the warmer temps.

The freezer in my refrigerator works fine, but the refrigerator does not maintain a cold enough temperature. Took everything apart in the freezer, saw that the unit had a lot of frost buildup on the coils, and the chute down to the refrigerator was a little frozen on the inside of the down chute, so cleaned it out, shut the unit down and let it defrost. Put everything back together, everything seems to be working fine, fan spins, but there is not a strong flow from the freezer to the refrigerator. Could this be the fan motor, or are there other parts that could be causing this? The fan motor spins, but it does not seem to spin with great speed or power? Also, what should be the ideal temperatures inside the freezer, and inside the refrigerator? Many thanks.

1 Answer

Hello John, The fan motor should run strong so it could be a factor. The manufacturer recommends 0°F to 10°F in the freezer compartment and the fresh food compartment is recommended to run from 35°F to 38°F.

Hello Ricardo. It sounds like you may have a defrost problem with the unit. If so, you will need to test the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. They should read closed for continuity when cold. You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. I will include a link at the end to assist you how to use the multi-meter if needed. If both parts are good, you will need to replace the defrost timer. Once the problem is repaired, you will need to thaw out the ice on the coils before the unit will operate properly. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html

Amanda, You will want to check to make sure that the defrost thermostat is properly installed. The unit should never get up to 125 degrees as long as the thermostat is properly installed and working properly.

Hello Amanda, The only way this could occur is if the defrost thermostat WP2321800 was bypassed or stuck in the closed position or the wiring harness has shorted to ground.

I did not make myself clear in the former question that I posted. I have placed these thermostats in ice water then froze the water for several hours in the freezer with the thermostat frozen inside the water. Still no continuity. Only one has the temp posted on the outside. It says that it should close at 22.5 degrees. It too is sitting in the freezer as we speak. It is not incased in ice but it has been freezing all day in the freezer. None of them close at any temperature.

1 Answer

Hello Todd. Try using a different meter. Could be the meter you are using is broke and not reading properly.
