The Dryer Drive Motor is an OEM part for Whirlpool dryers. This motor is responsible for turning the drum and the blower wheel, which allows for effective drying and air circulation within the dryer.

Over time, the drive motor can wear out or fail due to mechanical stress, electrical issues, or general wear from regular use. Causes of a bad drive motor include motor burnout, worn bearings, or issues with the electrical connections.

Symptoms of a bad dryer drive motor include:

  • The dryer drum not spinning
  • The dryer making unusual noises such as humming, buzzing, or grinding
  • The dryer starting but then stopping shortly after
  • A burning smell coming from the dryer

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Drive Motor (Part Number: OEM9282708)

1 Answer

Jim, This issue would not have anything to do with the motor bearing or the motor. This issue would be more likely a issue with the rollers and roller shafts. When the rollers and shafts heat up it will cause the noise and as it cools some during the cycle can stop.

Jim, This issue would be caused by a stuck centrifugal switch on the motor. You will want to check to make sure that there is no lint inside the ends of the motor and if not then the motor would need to be replaced.

Paul, If the unit starts then stops after a few minutes then restarts then stops again then the issue would most likely be caused by the timer.

Hello Doug, A high pitched whine is usually the indication of debris contacting the blower wheel. Normally nothing has to be replaced, you only need to remove the debris.

Hello Eric. You need to make sure the thermal fuse is good and the belt is not broke. If there is power to the motor and it does not run, you will need to replace the motor.

Romano for Model Number GGW9200LW1

I replaced the motor on a whirlpool duet because it won't spin anymore. After replacing the motor and putting the dryer back together, and turning the machine on, the drum spins, but now it won't stop spinning. Pressing the cancel button turns off the control panel, but the machine keeps running. Even if the machine is spinning, there is no heat. The only way the machine can be stopped is if you open the door, or pull the plug from the wall socket. On timed dry, the minutes do not count down. The control panel was working fine before I replaced the motor. Is the control board now damaged?

1 Answer

Hello Romano, You should pull the tech sheet and perform the tests recommended on it. This sounds like more than one problem. The unit not stopping at the end of the cycle could be a stuck set of relay contacts on the main board. The not heating complaint could be the ignitor or the coils on the gas valve. This is a situation where troubleshooting will be necessary to pinpoint the trouble.

Jim for Model Number 11085872400

My dryer currently won't run. all the diagnostic checks look good. the door switch and thermal switch check out. I ended up going back to my dryer technical sheet and following all the steps from the beginning to see what my problem might be. Everything checked out fine until I got to the motor circuit test. After struggling to find the right terminals to test I think I finally found them and showed infinite resistance on both the main and start motor circuit. I assume the motor is dead and needs to be replaced but I am not sure. I find it odd that both circuits would be blown at the same time. Is that normal or am I not checking out the motor properly? Any help is appreciated.

1 Answer

Jim, With your multi meter set at the lowest resistance setting (R1 orR2) you should read 2.4 to 3.6 ohms resistance from the blue wire on back and white/orange wire (run winding). You should have the same resistance reading between the blue wire and the purple wire (start winding). It is possible to damage both windings, but that's pretty rare.

Bill, Based on this information it sounds like either the motor is running off only the start winding or that the centrifugal switch in the motor is stuck and running both the run and start winding. For this issue you would want to replace the motor.
