The Spark Igniter is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool gas ranges. Located inside the oven cavity it initiates combustion using high-voltage electricity. This is a broil igniter for the upper (broil) burner.

Causes of malfunction relate primarily to element degradation from extended heating cycles. Exposure to grease or other residue accumulation shortens the service life by insulating the hot surface.

Symptoms involve:

  • Inability to ignite gas burners using the automatic igniter
  • Safety issues arise requiring manual lighting with matches or lighters
  • Difficulties baking or broiling without consistent flame generation
  • Element replacement prevents further problems and safety hazards

This is a genuine Whirlpool OEM replacement this part is also compatible with Maytag, Jenn-Air and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Spark Igniter (Part Number: OEM18034956)

1 Answer

Alfred, If the igniter is sparking then check for clogged ports in the burner and if there is none then this will most likely be a safety valve issue.

Steve, you have what is called DSI system, Direct Spark Ignition. All the power comes from a control board, a spark module in the console will be the most likely issue, part number is WPW10331686

Steve, yes, the first check would be the oven igniter and wiring. Check the wire to make sure it's not shorted or "pinched" to the cabinet or frame, the tip isn't damaged or "melted" and that it is in the correct position on the burner mount to properly spark and ignite the burner flame. Check the gas valve orifice, make sure it is clean and there's no debris, grease, or spillage in the opening of the orifice hood.

Broiler won't ignite. It sounds like it is trying to like but it doesn't I just smell gas. There is 50v when the oven is off no voltage when I turn the oven on. The bake portion of the oven works okay. I thought I could replace the broiler spark ignitor, but I was told I need to replace the main control module and overlay. Had it checked out last year and a new gas valve was installed. Everything was working ok. Please let me know what you suggests. Thank you!!!

Hello Bucky, sounds like the spark from the DSI spark module is not reaching the broiler ignitor, in that case replace the spark wire harness WP8524207.

Kitchenaid gas range: The broiler lights for about 5 seconds and then goes out. It will attempt to re-light after a minute or so and does the same thing. Seems to have a good flame for those few seconds. Can it be a faulty igniter? I took out the burner and checked it - pretty clean, no rust, and no debris came out. The temp sensor checks out (1091) and the gas valve checks out (215 on both sides). The igniter is working but I read somewhere that it can still be faulty and cause this condition. Not sure what else to do. Thoughts?

Rich, Is the range using Nat. Gas or LP Gas ? Are there any issues with the top burners ? The gas valve coils could still be weak, and "drop out" after a minute or two of operation. You may want to recheck the resistance at the time the gas valve shuts down, like any coil they can check proper when "cold". Check the wiring at the DSI spark module and at the igniter, again. If all's OK, the most likely issue is a weak or faulty ignition circuit for the oven in the DSI module WPW10331686 . Thanks,

Alex for Model Number KGSS907SBL00

Hello, before I start throwing parts at my range, I'd like some help with diagnosing an issue with the bottom flame not turning on sometimes. I'd say 30% of the time, the bottom element won't turn on. I hear clicking and gas flows (I use a BBQ lighter to turn in on during the 2nd try if the 1st doesn't work). It has a better chance of working if I use convection bake instead of bake and sub-freezing outdoor temperatures somehow make it much worse. I cleaned the points on the spark igniter and it seemed to help for a week or two, but it's back to being fussy. Top elements and broil work 100% of the time. What is the probable cause?

1 Answer

Alex, This issue sounds likely that it would be a oven safety valve that is not opening properly if you have spark at the igniter. Also check to make sure that the burner is clean and has no rust or debris on the ports which could also cause this issue.

Idoitall for Model Number KGSS907SSS01

My kicthenaid gas ranger MOD KGSS907SSS01 top burners works fine but the oven wont even make a click as I turn it on Ive checked the for dirt around where gas comes out -nothing there the broil electrical element is the only to heat up it took me almost all day to bake a small turkey. The warmer drawer also do not work. I would like to do the repair myself so, Can you tell me if I need to replace oven and broil igniter? Any help tips (video link) would be appreciated.

1 Answer

Idoitall, With this issue you will want to check the oven safety valve for 216 ohms of resistance and if the resistance checks ok then this will likely be the spark module.

Stacey, You will want to check the burner assembly for the bake to make sure that there are not clogged ports and that there is nothing in the entrance of the burner tube. If this checks ok then the most likely issue will be a faulty igniter.
