Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Electric Range Broil Element (Part Number: OEM17997774)

1 Answer

Richard, there is a thermal fuse WP3196548 located on the back of the range that could stop the broil element from operating. It would be recommended that this fuse is tested for continuity after unplugging the power cord. If it does not have continuity, it has failed and would need to be replaced.

Bob for Model Number WFE301LVS0

My broil element fails to heat. I checked it, and it has connectivity, though only about 16 ohms, which from what i read seems low. With the oven on and set to broil (which creates an audible click from a relay somewhere), but broiler element disconnected, when I measure the voltage between the broiler wire leads, I get around 108 V AC -- which is more than when it is off, but less than a full 220 - 240 V AC that I expected. When the broiler element is connected in the same situation, I don't measure any voltage across the (now connected) leads; I don't understand why there's a difference. The stove top electric burner elements all heat fine. The bake element also works (albeit somewhat slowly without help from the broil element). It even shuts off when it reaches temperature, indicating that the temperature sensor is working fine. I also put the oven into diagnostic mode, and determined that the temperature seems to be measured correctly, and the diagnostic tests reported no error. Additionally, I tested the voltage at the terminal block and the left and right terminals each measure approximately 120 V AC compared to the center terminal. What could be wrong here? I'm tempted to replace the broil element, but this situation doesn't seem to fully align with any of the symptoms for known problems. Thank you in advance.

Your broil element is good and the control WPW10271747 needs to be replaced. You get zero volts when you measure with the element that is good because the element has continuity, your leads are measuring the same point and there is no difference in voltage from point to point. If the element was bad you should have 240v from wire to wire.

Guy, Disconnect the power to the unit, remove one wire from the element and then plug the unit back in. Once you plug the unit in you will need to turn the oven on and test the element from the terminal on the element for 120 Vac and then test from the wire that you disconnected to chassis ground for 120 Vac. If there is not 120 Vac to each point then the issue will be the control board that is faulty. Also once the part has been installed it cannot be returned due to being an electrical part.

Hello Earnie, If you have 240Vac to the unit you will need to replace the control 4453711. I'm sorry but this part has been discontinued by the manufacturer and no satisfactory substitutions have been provided. You may be able to contact a company like Corecentric Solutions 866-737-2244/ corecentricsolutions.com and ask if they support Whirlpool board 4453711. If they do, they can refurbish the board for you. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

Sue, This issue would be caused by a faulty control board for the element not coming on during the bake.

Rita, There is a bake element and is part number WP9755770 and would be a hidden bake element and will need to pull the unit out and remove the back cover to locate the wires going to the element.
