The Thermal Fuse is an OEM part for Whirlpool ovens. It is designed to monitor the oven's temperature and automatically cut off power to the heating elements if the temperature exceeds a certain threshold. It acts as a failsafe to prevent excessive heat buildup and potential damage to the oven or surrounding areas.

Causes of a faulty oven thermal fuse can include a power surge, overheating, or electrical component failure. These factors can result in the thermal fuse blowing; interrupting the power supply to the heating elements and preventing further operation of the oven.

Symptoms of a bad oven thermal fuse may include:

  • Oven not heating up at all
  • Error codes or error messages displayed on the oven's control panel
  • Oven appears to be powered off

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Oven Thermal Fuse (Part Number: OEM18028221)

1 Answer

Sandy, The thermal fuse is a inline fuse that would be behind the control panel of the unit. You will want to remove the screw from the underside of the control and slide the unit out slightly and remove the screws from the side of the control panel. Once removed you will roll the bottom of the control panel up and lift off the oven.

Peter for Model Number Whirlpool RBD275PDQ4

Although power/circuit breaker is on, there is no power to the control board. When pushing "Upper Oven" and "Start" a short beep, followed by a long beep, followed by three short beeps are heard. I purchased two of the 4451042 fuse from you. Two questions: Is that the right fuse and if so do I have to remove the oven to get to the back to remove a cover over the lower oven area to change the fuse? Or can you tell me where it is located? Thanks, Peter

Peter, To access the fuse there is one of 2 ways to do this. The first way would be remove the control panel and try to access from the front and the other way is to pull the unit out from installation and remove the top to get to the fuse. You will want to also check on the control board from the P7 pin 1 to P4 pin 10 to see if there is 120 vac at this point. If there is then the thermal fuse is good and you would need to replace the control board which would be at fault.

John, You will want to check the thermal fuse for continuity, if there is continuity then the thermal fuse is good. You would then want to check for power between the P7 pin 1 and the P4 pin 10 and if there is 120 vac at this point then the control board is faulty and would need to be replaced.

Appnovice for Model Number GBD307

I have Whirlpool Double wall oven GBD307 which stopped working after self clean cycle. There was no display and the upper door oven door was locked. After reading many posts on internet including at this site, I purchased and replaced both the thermal fuses parts from appliancepartspros - AP3885687 Thermal overload (for upper oven) and AP3110028 Thermal Fuse (for control panel). After changing both the fuse when I turned the circuit breaker... there is burning smell coming from the control panel. Needless to say, there is still no display and door is locked. :-( There was no smell coming from control panel with circuit breaker ON before changing the fuses. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Jack, The most likely cause of the issue with the panel beeping but not having power would be the transformer. You will want to test the control transformer part number []. To test you will check for 120 vac at the P16 connector pins 5 and 7 and check for 12-24 vdc on the P16 connection pins 2 and 3. If there is 120 vac to the transformer but not 120 vac out then the issue would be the transformer. If there is not 120 vac to the transformer then test for power on the P24 pins 3 to pin 1 and see if there is 120 vac and if there is then the control board is faulty. The transformer part number is WP9760587.

Hello Jim. Access the back of the control board. Where the wiring harness comes into the board, you will see the old fuse in the harness. You remove the old fuse and install the new fuse into the harness of the unit.
