The Gear Case Oil is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It lubricates the gears and components within the washing machine’s transmission, ensuring smooth and efficient operation during the wash and spin cycles.

Causes of bad gear case oil can include degradation over time, contamination from water or debris, and leaks due to worn seals or gaskets.

Symptoms of a bad gear case oil include:

  • Loud or unusual noises during the wash or spin cycles
  • The washing machine not agitating or spinning properly
  • Oil leaks visible under the washing machine
  • Increased friction or overheating of the transmission components

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Gear Case Oil (Part Number: OEM9218889)

Bob, You are able to put the oil back in the unit but would need to remove the transmission and open it up to get it back in. It will not be necessary to put more oil in as this unit will run with minimal oil.

John, You're on track and on target. Once you determine what happened to the collar WP22002340 or spring retainer clip WP215581 you will need to drain the gearcase and replace the oil, with part number 6-0560800. You will also need a silicone based sealant W10841140 to seal the gearcase cover to the gearcase housing. Both parts are in stock and available at this time. Thanks,

Dale, Unfortunately there is no way to put oil back into the transmission. You would have to replace the transmission in this case but having 1/4 way full should work and should not cause any issue.

Roper, All Whirlpool built top load washers use the same oil / lube in the gear case 350572. A suitable, acceptible substitute is 90 weight gear oil / differential lube, available at most auto parts supply businesses. Good Luck,

Kenmore series 70 washer...10 years old or more. Washer is slow to agitate, barely agitates at all and clothes not getting clean. But rinse and spin cycles are fine. Checked the agitator dog teeth and they look good, not rounded. Checked the coupler also no issues or breaks. Checked the clutch, can turn/ spin it some and lot of brake dust debris present. Checked the transmission gears (sears rebuilt trans) no broken teeth but gear oil is black. Seems like a little play in axle side to side, not sure what is normal though. Does the clutch impact agitation? Other suggestions. Thinking of changing clutch band and coupler while apart and transmission oil change. Would you advise differently?

Al, While it would not be a bad idea to change the coupler and clutch band lining, it should not be necessary to replace the gearcase oil. As for the issue with the unit not agitating on a fast agitation and only on slow, could be a stuck switch on the motor. This would be most likely other than agitator dogs that are bad. The dogs can look good but still be defective. What you can do to check this is push in on the lid switch with the washer full of water and remove the cover over the dogs and watch them. If they appear to be skipping any then the issue will be the dogs.

Hello John. Yes, it is yellow and there is a weep hole it came out of. The unit should still have oil in it and will work fine without the oil that leaked out. Thanks.

Hello Jim. There is no need to add it back. The unit should work fine without that little of amount.
