For Whirlpool Gearcase (Part Number: OEM18787182)

Rich for Model Number WTW4950XW2

I am reasonably sure that the gearcase needs replacing on mine, based on the noise. It had been working (while extremely noisy) till now, but it stopped spinning the clothes out and then stopped altogether. In manual test mode when I activate the low spin or high spin, the motor starts to turn for a few seconds then it just peters out, so my question is, although I can spin it by hand, is it not able to get the drum spinning now because there is just too much resistance due to the bad bearings?

Rich, You will want to check the pulley on the bottom of the unit to ensure that it is on tight and if the pulley is tight then based on the noise issue it does sound like it would be a bearing issue. The gearcase would need to be replaced for this issue.

have a water leak at bottom of machine, disconnected all hoses and power, flipped over, checked pump (no signs of leakage) hoses all good. Looks like water coming from center behind the drive pulley. took off center pulley and belt. unhooked all wire plugs. Is it just the 4 bolts that hold the whole assy.?is there a seal on shaft that is leaking? machine was starting to make loud noises while in spin mode. also at times have to reset controls for it to continue to wash.? your time and effort in this matter is greatly appreciated. thank-you

Hello David. Yes, based on the information you provided, it sounds like the gear case W11132267 has failed and the seal and bearings are bad. You can only get the bearings with this part.

Hello Paul. You need to check the bearings and shocks on the unit. If good, replace the main board on the unit.

Hello Dave. It should lift out now. Some of these are extremely hard to remove if the shaft is rusty.

Dan for Model Number WTW4950XW2

Washer less then 4 yrs old. Making an extremely loud noise during the spin cycle (sounds like an airplane taking off!). I'm suspecting the gearcase is bad. Started disassembling machine, everything appeared to be in it's place and tight. Removed impeller and tub ring. Unable to pull basket off of shaft (tried spraying with penetrating oil...no luck). Went to the bottom, disconnected all the harnesses, removed 4 screws holding gearcase assembly on...unable to pull gear case assembly off of basket and tub. Following instructions in tech manual (http://applianceassistant.com/ServiceManuals/w10329932_l-84_whirlpool_vertical_modular_washer.pdf). Baffled. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated on getting things apart, as well as if the gearcase is a likely culprit of the noise.

Dan, With the washer screaming during spin cycle then it is most likely the gearcase that is the issue as the gearcase has the bearings in it. For removal of the tub, you may have to try wobbling the tub from side to side to get it freed up. It sounds like it is just stuck from possible old detergent build up.
