The Washer Gear Case is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is a critical component that houses the gears responsible for the rotation and agitation of the washer drum. This gear case ensures that the washer performs its washing cycles effectively by providing the necessary mechanical movements.

Causes of a bad gear case can include wear and tear from prolonged use, lubrication breakdown leading to increased friction, or damage from overloading the washer. Additionally, exposure to water leaks can lead to corrosion and deterioration of the internal components.

Symptoms of a bad gear case include:

  • Unusual grinding or clunking noises during the wash cycle
  • The drum not spinning or agitating properly
  • Leaks of oil or grease underneath the washer
  • The washer failing to complete its cycles

This OEM part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Gear Case (Part Number: OEM20981760)

1 Answer

Steve, Look for the unit getting off balance during the spin cycle as this would be the most likely cause. This would be caused by the unit not being level or bad suspension rods.

Henry, The tub for this unit is designed to move around as it is on suspension rods. As far as the noise on this model. If it is happening during a spin then this will most likely be an issue with the bearings. The gearcase would need to be replaced for this issue.

My Amana top load washer will not agitate or spin; I've replaced the control board, lid lock assembly, & actuator & still not spinning. I've reset the washer per technicians instructions (as well as youtube) & ran the full system diagnostics & it performs all stages but spin. When it's time to spin you can hear an attempt to engage (2x) but nothing happens. after about 7-10 minutes it drains out. I'm now being told it "could" be the capacitor but I'm $340.00 into parts I don't need so I want to get a second opinion. I've seen in other cases where this could be the splutch cam but the drum turns by hand easily & the belt is in good shape. Should I disassemble the splutch cam & inspect the teeth? Thank u...

Chris, You would want to put the unit into diagnostics and check for error codes as the codes will guide you to the issue with the unit.

DMPperfection101, You will want to check to make sure that the spanner nut is tight and if it is tight then check the splutch assembly to make sure that it is good.

Washer wont spin out all the way so I tipped it over and there is grease or oil all over the belt and i am guessing the reason its not spinning cloths dry is the belt is slipping. I'm guessing a seal on the gearcase is leaking. Do I have to replace it or can I just replace the belt and clean up the oil so it stops slipping? I know eventually the gearcase could go bad but looking for a quick fix or am I better off replacing gear case, splutch, and belt.

1 Answer

Cody, It would be recommended to replace the gearcase if the oil has leaked out because there may still be oil in it and could still leak and cause the same issue. he splutch should not need changed unless damaged.

Lori, The motor does not have grease in it and it would be more likely that the gearcase would be causing this issue.

John, The Gearcase is a separate part that will have the bearings and seal with it but will not have the other parts listed on the parts diagram. If you are needing the other parts you will need to get them separately.
