The Defrost Drain Tube Heater Probe is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool refrigerators. Located near the drainage tube in the refrigerator liner, this probe monitors and controls the defrost drain tube heater.

Causes of a bad defrost drain tube heater probe include cracked solder joints or wiring connections due to normal vibration over time. Without the proper functioning of this probe, the drain tube heater will not activate during defrost cycles.

Symptoms of a bad defrost drain tube heater probe include:

  • Accumulation of ice or water in the drain tube drainage area
  • Inability to fully defrost and clear buildup from the drain tube
  • Error codes indicating heating element issues

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Defrost Drain Heater- Probe (Part Number: OEM9359880)

1 Answer

Hello Edward, This 819043 is compatible with your unit. We do strongly recommend that the probe be trimmed so it will not physically contact any rubber or plastic parts to avoid damage to the drain/liner and avoid any hot plastic/burning odors inside the unit. You should make sure there are no air leaks contributing to the ice/frost accumulation.

Hello Tim. This is universal. You can cut it to fit any of the units. If this model keeps freezing over, you may want to look for a bad drip pan.

Hello Rhonda. No, it is not hard. Just access the heater and hook it around the heater. Then make sure the probe end goes into the drain hole. Tighten the screw so it can not move.

Backofbook for Model Number ET1MHKXMT00

The freezer drain on my Whirlpool refrigerator keeps icing over causing water to accumulate inside the veggie drawer and bottom of the fresh food compartment. I have installed the 819043 Probe Kit and wonder if this will cause damage to the drain or worse, if it might cause a fire. I see this topic has been brought up here and one answer was that it won't get hot enough to cause damage and the water cools it off also. Another answer was that the probe must be trimmed to not contact the drain as it would cause damage. Which answer is correct or does it depend on the model?

1 Answer

Hello Backofbook, This is really depending on the construction of the model in question. Of course you will not want the metal part hanging from a red hot element to contact rubber or plastic while some models incorporate a metal liner.
