The Defrost Drain Tube Heater Probe is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool refrigerators. Located near the drainage tube in the refrigerator liner, this probe monitors and controls the defrost drain tube heater.

Causes of a bad defrost drain tube heater probe include cracked solder joints or wiring connections due to normal vibration over time. Without the proper functioning of this probe, the drain tube heater will not activate during defrost cycles.

Symptoms of a bad defrost drain tube heater probe include:

  • Accumulation of ice or water in the drain tube drainage area
  • Inability to fully defrost and clear buildup from the drain tube
  • Error codes indicating heating element issues

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Hello Craig. We have no way of cross checking with Kenmore on this part. However, you can use it on any model that it will reach the drain hole from the heater.

Sonja for Model Number ET1CHMXKT03

I just installed one of the 819043 heat probes on my mom & dad heat element tonite. I have installed this same probe on my own refrigerator 2 yrs ago and it has worked great. My question is, the heat element on this fridge seemed closer to the drain hole therefore making the probe seem to go down the drain hole slightly longer than on my own fridge. I didn't trim it tho because I was afraid I was wrong about the length and would make it ineffective. How will I know if it is too long down into the rubber drain hole and possibly cause damage to the unit?? Obviously my biggest concern would be overheating causing a fire! (my parents are elderly...) A reassuring answer would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Hello Sonja. It will be fine. The water cools the probe and it does not get hot enough to damage.

I own a Kenmore 106.60962990 Refrigerator, it came with the home I bought in June. I have been having the same water backflowing into fridge compartment problem that others have described. I tried removing the accumulated ice twice, but the problem remained. It only occurred to me to check for a clogged drain tube after mentioning the problem to a family member. However, after doing more research, it appears as though this problem is a design flaw. Even if I clear the drain tube now, the problem will most likely come back again, unless I install one of these. I would think that the manufacturer should supply this part at no cost to the consumer.

Hello K.D., While this is considered by some to be a design flaw, it is not always possible for man to control the laws of science. As an example, other manufacturers have had the issue with different design machines. I cannot go into any more detail on the causes from the design you have in your home since no model number was listed. I can tell you that in some cases the issue is caused by a short defrost cycle, a weak defrost thermostat, an air leak and even the unit settings can cause the issue under certain circumstances.

Hello Enrique, Most of the time this indicates the freezer compartment is operating at too low a temperature. It can also be caused by a weak defrost thermostat WP4387503. If a defrost drain heater is needed, 819043 can be installed as long as it is trimmed so it cannot contact any plastic or metal parts as this can cause damage to the unit.

Dale, You will want to make sure that you flush the drain with hot water once you clear out all the ice and make sure that the drain is flowing. Once this is done install the heat probe 819043 and this should correct the issue.
