Manufacturer Part Number: WP2323198

The Heater is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators. This part prevents frost buildup by heating the evaporator coils during the defrost cycle. This part ensures that air flows freely over the coils, improving the efficiency of the cooling system and maintaining the refrigerator at the optimal temperature.

Causes of a bad heater can include electrical failures, such as a blown fuse or a faulty wiring connection, or physical damage to the heater element itself.

Symptoms of a bad Heater include:

  • Frost buildup on the evaporator coils
  • The refrigerator and freezer not maintaining the desired temperatures
  • Increased energy consumption as the refrigerator works harder to cool
  • Unusual noises from the refrigerator as the fan hits frost buildup

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Brian, The glides that the drawer would slide in on can be removed in order to get the rear panel off and lift out the evaporator. If the silver tray is in the way it can be bent a little to get the evaporator pulled out.

Hello Maria, Water in the freezer floor usually indicates a frozen defrost drain. This should be cleared and put a tablespoon of white vinegar in it to kill any algae that may be forming in the drain hose. The unit most likely has a bad control board WPW10135090 if the defrost heater ohms out properly.

Brian for Model Number Kenmore 106.57036601

Recently my refrigerator side stopped cooling and the freezer side was getting a large buildup of frost that would flow into the fridge side. It was originally diagnosed as a dead defrost control board. After replacing that, the fridge side cools properly but every 10hrs approx. the circuit breaker flips. Resetting the circuit breaker enables the refrigerator to continue working correctly for another 10hrs. Upon testing the heater today, the heater has continuity but it also appears to be grounding. What is going on? Should I replace the heater? Please help!

Scott, the defrost heater WP2323198 would need to be tested for resistance and it should measure between 21O to 27O and the defrost thermostat WPW10225581 would be tested for continuity (should have continuity). However, the thermistors could potentially cause this issue if they are not registering properly.

Michael, if you remove the clips that hold the heater to the bottom of the evaporator, you will then be able to move the element to the side and down to rotate it out of the evaporator assembly. There is not a lot of play room, but this can often times be the easiest way to replace the heater if the evaporator can not be pulled out slightly.

Hello Dominique, I'm sorry but this part [] has been discontinued by the manufacturer and no satisfactory substitutions have been provided. While you can try any part you would like to replace this one, we cannot guarantee they will fit or work properly since the design engineers of the appliance have not approved them as satisfactory replacement parts for your model. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
