The Water Inlet Valve Assembly is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines.  This part controls the flow of water into the appliance during the fill cycle. This assembly consists of a valve that opens and closes to allow water from the household supply to enter the washing machine at the right times and in the correct amounts, depending on the selected wash cycle and water temperature settings.

Causes of a bad water inlet valve can include sediment buildup, which restricts water flow, wear and tear that impairs the valve's operation, or electrical issues that prevent the valve from opening or closing properly.

Symptoms of a bad Water Inlet Valve Assembly include:

  • The washing machine not filling with water
  • Water filling too slowly or overflowing
  • Unusual noises during the fill cycle
  • Water not reaching the desired temperature

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

For Whirlpool Water Inlet Valve Assembly (Part Number: OEM18027165)

1 Answer

Bill, Check to see if there is 120 vac constant to the water valve. If there is then this will most likely be a faulty water valve.

Bob, Thanks for the question!!! This valve assembly contains a thermistor. It is likely the thermistor has failed causing the issue at hand and the valve would need to be replaced to correct the issue.

This is likely caused by a failed ATC switch WPW10184148 or a possible issue with the incoming hot water pressure. If the pressure is an issue see your local hardware store for a Water Hammer Arrestor.

Formico for Model Number GSW9800PW2

Water will not fill with any of the settings - wash or rinse. We took the hoses off and verified there is good water pressure to the washing machine. We visually checked the water inlet valve and it appeared to be very clean. We removed the water inlet valve and tested it on a digital multimeter GDT-311, With the ohm setting on 200 we do not get a reading and the meter remains at 1. With the ohm setting at 2000 we get a reading of 788 and 784 on the two solenoids. The procedure indicates a reading of 500 to 1500 indicates the unit is electronically good. Did we do this correctly? We also tested the lid switch. On ours there is three prongs. If I set the multimeter to 200 on the middle prong and prong closest to the front of the washer we get a reading of 1.3. We do not get a reading with any other combinations on the switch. Are either of these the issue? Please let us know what to do next. Thank You, Formico

Hello Formico, if the washer will not fill or go into drain/ spin then check there is 120v going to the washer, next as a test, jump out the lid switch and test the washer,

TVRTK, Be sure the pulsing is not the ATC switching from hot to cold during the fill. If not then it would likely be a water valve issue.

Dan S for Model Number 110.28732700

The washer is very slow to fill with water so I cleaned the mesh screens that are inside the inlet valves. there was some sediment in the cold water screen and this was cleaned and then hoses were reattached. upon running the washer again, the water flowed normally into the tub but then slowly the flow reduced below the normal rate. both hoses were checked for any problems and also flushed with no problems noted. i suspect the problem might be the fill valves.

1 Answer

Dan, For this issue, the fill valve would be the issue that is causing the slow fill.

Hello Tim, You should first check the water hoses to ensure the hot water is connected to the hot connection. If water is supplied to the rinse side of the valve, (cold), the issue is most likely a bad water valve WP3979346.

Kathie, your washer, in order to meet energy standards, will limit the temperature of the hot water by adding cold water as it fills, even on the hot water fill cycle. Even though your water temperature is maybe 120-130 degrees, it will add cold water to bring the temperature to around 100 degrees. You cannot get 120-130 degree hot water to go into your washer.
